The Renata AG with headquarters in Itingen is a Swiss manufacturer of micro-batteries . It is one of four companies in the Electronic Systems division of the Swatch Group .

The company was founded in 1952 to manufacture components for wristwatches . In the 1970s, Renata specialized in the production of button cells . In 2001, the company hit the headlines because of a wrong strategic decision when setting up a production facility for cell phone batteries.

Renata AG produces around 800,000 button cells every day at its plant in Itingen. The main products are batteries based on silver oxide, zinc-air batteries, lithium button cells and thin-film cells for electronic watches, telecommunications and medical technology, as well as rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.

After the Swatch subsidiary Belenos Clean Power Holding developed a new battery type based on lithium-ion technology with sensational properties in cooperation with ETH Zurich , Renata first started prototype production. Both Belenos Clean Power Holding and Renata AG are subsidiaries of the Swatch Group. What is new about this type of battery is the use of vanadium pentoxide and the composition of the electrolyte. Nick Hayek, CEO of the Swatch Group, mentions a 30% increase in performance compared to the batteries in Tesla electric cars. Quote Hayek: "Our battery is not only more powerful and lighter, it also charges twice as quickly." Automobiles equipped with such batteries are to be tested in China from 2017. The Chinese car manufacturer Geely is a partner of Belenos for this. Homologation of these batteries in Geely cars in China is planned for mid-2018.
