historical overview
Insead was founded in Fontainebleau in 1957, three months after the Treaty of Rome was signed , by Georges Frederic Doriot , a Franco-American Harvard professor. Insead was thus the first business school in Europe and took a pioneering position in the European business school landscape. The founding idea was to train a future pan-European business elite and thus to serve the reconstruction of Europe. Since the beginning, the range of courses and the way in which knowledge is imparted has been based heavily on American models (especially the Harvard Business School). In 1969 the current campus in Fontainebleau opened. The PhD program began in 1989.
In January 2000 the first 53 MBA students from 26 countries started on the newly opened campus in Singapore; This campus was officially opened in October 2000. The Insead-Wharton Alliance was launched in 2001 and the Executive MBA program started in 2003. In 2010 the campus in Abu Dhabi was opened.
