Leo-Ferdinand Maria Lazarus Romwolt Wilhelm Edwin Gerhard Count Henckel von Donnersmarck (born December 26, 1935 in Bytom ( Beuthen ), Upper Silesia , † July 23, 2009 in Berlin ) was Honorary and Devotion Grand Cross Bailli of the Sovereign Order of Malta and from 1997 to 2006 President of the German Association of the Order.

Leo-Ferdinand Count Henckel von Donnersmarck came from the Count's Henckel von Donnersmarck family and was the eldest son of the couple Friedrich-Carl Count Henckel von Donnersmarck (1905-1989) and Anna-Ilse von Zitzewitz (1910-1996).

He was married to Anna-Maria von Berg (* 1940) since 1968. The sons Sebastian (* 1972) and Florian , director and Oscar winner, emerged from the marriage. He was the only brother of the former abbot of the Cistercians Gregor Henckel-Donnersmarck .

Life

Henckel von Donnersmarck studied law and political science at the University of Vienna and completed an MBA at INSEAD (Institut Européen d'Administration des Affaires) in Fontainebleau. He was promoted to Dr. jur. PhD.

From 1967 to 1996 he worked in various management positions for Deutsche Lufthansa AG, most recently as director of the Berlin branch. Henckel von Donnersmarck had been a member of the Order of Malta since 1958, where he was involved in addition to his professional activity. In 1996 he took early retirement and was elected President of the German Association of the Sovereign Order of Malta in 1997; He was followed in 2006 by Erich Prinz von Lobkowicz . As president, he restructured the German works of the order, especially the Malteser relief service . As the moderator of all national associations of the internationally active Order of Malta, he assumed an important position in the structure of the order, which is active in over 120 countries. In 1997 he was also involved in an extraordinary general chapter of the Order of Malta , in which the religious law of the 900-year-old order was restructured. Since 2000 he has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Forum of German Catholics and since 2003 a member of the Board of Trustees of the Fürst Donnersmarck Foundation .

Henckel von Donnersmarck died at the age of 73 of leukemia in the Helios Klinikum Berlin-Buch , where he had been treated since 2007.

Since Henckel von Donnersmarck could no longer move freely because of his weakened immune system , Tom Cruise arranged a special screening of his film Operation Walküre for him on February 27, 2009 .
