Gunnar Dedio

Gunnar Dedio (born November 16, 1969 in Rostock ) is a German film producer and media entrepreneur . He is the founder and managing director of the film production company LOOKSfilm .

Life

Gunnar Dedio grew up in Rostock and attended the 35th POS Albin Köbis as well as the Herder Oberschule , which taught Russian, English and French intensively. As a long-time student of Peter Heidrich , Dedio enjoyed a cosmopolitan upbringing and was interested in psychology and history from an early age . After the fall of the wall, Dedio moved to France, where he studied modern literature at the University of Avignon . During this time he met Fernand Meyssonnier, France's last executioner, in 1992 . Fascinated by its history, the documentary film Hangman - Death Has a Face (2001) and the book The Last Hangman (2002) were made.

Dedio, who initially worked for German newspaper publishers during his studies , founded his own newspaper publisher in 1994 and the film production company LOOKSfilm in Rostock in 1995. LOOKSfilm is now represented in Leipzig , Berlin and Hanover and produces series and feature films for VoD platforms, cinema and television.

In parallel to his work as a producer and managing director, Dedio conducted his executive training at INSEAD , IMD and MIT . At INSEAD he studied with Manfred FR Kets de Vries, Roger Lehman and Eric van der Loo and completed the Executive Master in Consulting and Coaching for Change (EMCCC Wave 21) in 2016 .

Dedio regularly teaches film production at the Hanover University of Applied Sciences in the TV journalism master’s course, Mittweida University and other universities .

With its production company LOOKSfilm, Dedio specializes in international co-productions on historical topics . From the beginning he worked closely with the French broadcasters Arte , Les Films d'Ici, Teleimages, Lagardère , ZADIG and other French broadcasters and producers.

In 2008, his production company established its own archive department, which, in addition to research and rights trading, was responsible for the distribution of British Pathé from 2011 to 2016 .

Dedio became internationally known with the documentary series Back then in the GDR (2004), for which he received the Adolf Grimme Prize in 2005 .

In 2011 LOOKSfilm produced the documentary drama series 14 - Diaries of the First World War (2014) developed by Dedio and director Jan Peter . It is the first German series for which Netflix US acquired the license rights. For this series production, Dedio also initiated a multimedia cooperation with museums , publishers and online media .

In 2014 Dedio produced the first historical documentary series about the First World War for children Little Hands in the Great War (2014), the continuation of which Der Krieg und Ich (2019) was awarded the Golden Sparrow 2018.

War of Dreams (2018), the sequel to 14 diaries of the First World War , was also developed by Dedio and Jan Peter and produced under the responsibility of LOOKSfilm. The series about the interwar period was created in collaboration with 23 international broadcasters and was first broadcast on Arte in September 2018. It was part of the transnational project Clash of Futures , which was devoted to the interwar period internationally and across all media. InDecember 2018, Rolling Stone voted the series among the top ten most popular German series of all time.

In addition to documentaries, Dedio has been producing feature films since 2010, such as the multi-award-winning co-productions Michael Kohlhaas (2013) with Mads Mikkelsen and Bruno Ganz , Licht (2017) with Maria Dragus and Devid Striesow and Die Sanfte by Sergei Loznitsa .

The The Cuba Libre Story (2016), Age of Tanks (2017), and Bobby Kennedy for President (2018) are other productions and co-productions by Dedio in collaboration with Netflix.
