Back then in the GDR is a German ten-part documentary film series that was awarded the Adolf Grimme Prize in 2005. It was produced by LOOKSfilm , MDR and WDR . The documentary films each show contemporary witnesses who report on life in the German Democratic Republic .
The title song of the series is sung by Udo Lindenberg . On July 28, 2006 the documentary films were also released on DVD .

The documentary film series shows the personal fates of people in the GDR. Accompanied by archive material and newly opened amateur films , photos and documents , contemporary witnesses have their say, their different perspectives and stories trace a personal image of the GDR. The individual episodes follow one another chronologically and each highlight different aspects of life in the GDR.
