David Alec Gwyn Simon, Baron Simon of Highbury Kt CBE (born July 24, 1939 ) is a British businessman , politician and life peer .

life and career

Simon was born on June 24, 1939. He graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1961 and joined British Petroleum as a management trainee and became Chief Executive of BP Oil International in 1982 . In 1986 he became Managing Director of BP in 1986, Chief Executive of BP in 1992 and Chairman of the BP Board of Directors from 1995 to 1997.

He studied at Insead , then became a consultant at Unilever and was chairman of the Belgo-British Conference in 2004 .

Simon worked in business for many years. From 1995 to 1997 he was a member of the Bank of England Court . He was the Non-Executive Director of Grand Metropolitan plc from 1989 to 1996 and of The RTZ Corporation plc from 1995 to 1997 , and of CRA Ltd from 1995 to 1997. From 2006 to 2009 he was Vice Chairman of Unilever , from 2000 to 2009 Chairman of the Supervisory Board.

Since 2000 he has been a Senior Adviser at Morgan Stanley . From 1991 to 1997 he was a member of the supervisory board of Deutsche Bank . From 1996 to 1997 he was a member of the Supervisory Board of Allianz AG . From 2000 to 2008 he was a member of the International Council and UK Advisory Board of Insead. From 2000 to 2005 he was a member of the supervisory board of LEK Consulting and from 2001 to 2004 that of Fortis .

Since 2001 he has been a member of the Suez Group's supervisory board . From 2001 to 2006 he was a member of the Fitch International Advisory Committee . From 2002 to 2006 he was a member of the Volkswagen AG Supervisory Board . Since 2006 he has been a member of Dana Gas' International Advisory Board .

From 1999 to 2003 he was an advisor to Prime Minister Tony Blair on government modernization. Simon has been a member of the Center for European Reform since 1996 . In 1999 and 2003 he was a member of the Advisory Group on Reform of the EU . He has been a member of the Center for European Policy Studies since 2002 .

From 2000 to 2005 he was Chairman of the Cambridge University Foundation . Since 2005 he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the University of Cambridge . From 2001 to 2010 he was a member of the Trustee Council of the Hertie Foundation and, during the same period, of Cicely Saunders International . He is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Tallow Chandlers and the Worshipful Company of Carmen .

From 1988 to 1992 and from 1994 to 1995 he was a member of the Sports Council . From 1992 to 1997 he was a member of the President's Committee of the CBI.

Simon is currently a consultant to KPMG and Montrose Associates . At the Institute of Government he is a member of the Board of Trustees. Simon is a member of the Board of Trustees and Vice Chairman of the Cambridge University Council .

Simon was a member of the European Union Competitive Advisory Group from 1995 to 1997 and advisor to the EU Commission President from 1999 to 2000.

Simon was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1991 and was knighted as a Knight Bachelor in 1995 .

Membership in the House of Lords

Simon was promoted to life peer on May 16, 1997 as Baron Simon of Highbury , of Canonbury in the London Borough of Islington . He gave his inaugural address in the House of Lords on May 22, 1997. He was initially a member of the Labor Party , but resigned on June 22, 2010 and has been non-affiliated since then .

From 2005 to 2008 and since July 23, 2010 he has been on leave of absence granted by the House of Lords .
