The Federal University Institute for Vocational Training SFIVET is the Swiss expert organization for vocational training. It trains and further educates those responsible for vocational training, researches vocational training, develops professions and supports international vocational training cooperation. The EHB is located in Zollikofen near Bern (headquarters), Lausanne and Lugano, with external locations in Olten and Zurich.

The federal government is the owner of the SFIVET. In accordance with Article 25 of the SFIVET Ordinance, the Federal Council defines the SFIVET's strategic objectives. The SFIVET is - like the ETH - affiliated with the Federal Department of Economics, Education and Research EAER.

The Federal University Institute SFIVET provides services in the following areas:

  • Training of those responsible for vocational training;
  • Further training for those responsible for vocational training;
  • Research and development in vocational training;
  • Career development.

In addition, the SFIVET takes on various tasks and research activities on behalf of the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation SERI. With its various services, the SFIVET is committed to digital transformation. In particular, the SFIVET supports projects that aim to develop a digitization or e-learning strategy, as well as projects that aim to promote the digital skills of teachers.

The SFIVET has managed various projects of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and recently carried out the project “in the heart of vocational training” in the form of an interactive exhibition that was featured at various professional and training fairs in French-speaking Switzerland.

The work of the SFIVET follows the principle of “practice in the service of practice” and thus constantly builds a bridge to professional practice in all service areas.

The SFIVET is the only educational institution nationwide with such a mandate at four locations in three language regions and thus guarantees a uniform and comparable implementation of federal regulations. The SFIVET is the link between the organizations of the world of work (OdA) and the 26 cantons with several hundred vocational schools and colleges. As a national institute, the SFIVET assumes an important role for these partners as the central point of contact for all questions in connection with development projects and the training and further education of those responsible for vocational training. The university institute also maintains a close network of relationships with national and international partners from business and science. His expertise in vocational training is in international demand, be it in international projects, educational programs, conferences or when receiving delegations.

The offer also includes courses for vocational trainers in inter-company courses, training workshops and other learning locations for professional practice. In autumn 2007 the division launched a unique offer for the scientific qualification of university graduates throughout Switzerland: the Master of Science (MSc) in vocational training.

further education

The tasks of the continuing education division include, in particular, the implementation of centralized courses to promote the professional development of those responsible for vocational training, the provision of courses that serve to promote and further develop the professional training organizations, the development of training courses for managers in vocational training and other offers that promote quality and serve innovation in VET.

In order to be able to fulfill this mandate, the range of services offered by the training division includes in particular:

Research and Development

The Research and Development R&D division prepares the basis for the various training courses. It conducts evaluations and efficiency tests, for example, and develops projects in the field of competence assessment that serve as the basis for the future development of vocational training.

The R&D division of the SFIVET defines central topics related to vocational training in the sense of an agenda setting. The R&D employees ensure that questions are investigated that can provide answers to the current challenges in vocational training practice. The knowledge gained through the research flows into teaching at the SFIVET and thus back into practice. This benefits the learners as well as the teachers in vocational training, the organizations of the world of work, the educational policy and finally the society as a whole.

The SFIVET's research activities are organized into three thematic research areas, each with three research fields. The Swiss Observatory for Vocational Training OBS SFIVET and the Evaluation Unit complete the range of services offered by the division.

The three main research areas of research and development at the SFIVET are:

Center for Professional Development

The Center for Professional Development ZfB accompanies the development and implementation of basic and advanced vocational training. It provides professional analysis and professional development services; The offer ranges from the description of the competencies required for exercising the profession, the definition of educational goals, the organization and duration of the education, to the definition of the qualification process.

The tasks of the ZfB include advising, accompanying and supporting organizations in the world of work and bodies responsible for basic and higher vocational training in all stages of the development of their professions. In addition, the ZfB offers practice-oriented services tailored to the needs of organizations in the world of work / sponsorships. And finally, the ZfB promotes action competence orientation at all learning locations.

In order to be able to perform these tasks, the ZfB offers:

"Skilled" magazine

Since 2017, the SFIVET has published the “skilled” magazine twice a year . “Skilled” sheds light on the latest trends in vocational training in Switzerland and abroad. With the magazine, the SFIVET wants to promote the exchange of information and knowledge as well as networking between all actors in vocational training.

History of the institute

From SIBP to EHB (1972-2007)

The Federal University Institute for Vocational Education and Training (SFIVET) emerged from the Swiss Institute for Vocational Education (SIBP), founded in Zollikofen in 1972. The SIBP was founded in 1972 at the Zollikofen location. In 1975 a second location was opened in Lausanne for French-speaking Switzerland and in 1991 a third location in Lugano for Italian-speaking Switzerland.

The tasks of the SIBP essentially comprised the training and further education of teachers in the commercial-industrial area, namely full-time and part-time teachers at vocational schools as well as teachers at vocational schools with special functions in school management, practical advice or mediation.

In cooperation with the cantons and the professional associations, the SIBP also organized courses for instructors of teacher training courses as well as instruction courses for examination experts. Other tasks also included the implementation of research and development projects in the field of vocational training and the preparation of studies and reports.

In 2001, the Federal Office for Vocational Education and Technology OPET (now SERI) also entrusted the SIBP with the training and further education of teachers in the commercial field and the training of experts in qualification procedures for basic vocational training.

On January 1, 2007, the SIBP became the Federal University Institute for Vocational Training SFIVET. The reasons for this replacement were two far-reaching reforms in the Swiss education system, namely the tertiarization of teacher training and the reforms in vocational training.

With these two reforms and the newly assigned tasks and competencies, the structures and organization of the institute were also re-adjusted and the offers were positioned across Switzerland.
