Immanuel Dornfeld

Immanuel August Ludwig Dornfeld (born May 15, 1796 in Neckarweihingen , today Ludwigsburg , † December 29, 1869 in Weinsberg ) was a German administrative officer in 18 cities and communities in Württemberg. He was a wine grower and is considered the spiritual father and main initiator of the viticulture school in Weinsberg.

Life

Immanuel Dornfeld was born in Neckarweihingen in 1796 as the son of a village pastor . After attending the Latin School in Ludwigsburg and an apprenticeship as a clerk in Gaildorf , he embarked on an administrative career. From 1812 to 1869 he worked in various functions, such as clerk and camera administrator, in 18 cities and municipalities in Württemberg in different authorities. He was a member of the Society for Wine Improvement Württemberg and from 1850 camera administrator for the Oberamt Weinsberg . Dornfeld acquired knowledge of viticulture as an autodidact. His long-term commitment to establishing a viticulture school is considered to be his merit. As early as 1849, he submitted detailed proposals for this. This viticulture school was after approval on December 9, 1863 by King Wilhelm I and a construction period of about two years in Weinsberg on 22/23. Opened February 1868. He died in Weinsberg in 1869 and was buried there. Dornfeld wrote the first comprehensive history of viticulture in Swabia. A new breed from Weinsberg, the Dornfelder , was named in his honor.
