history

Starkenberg station

The neighboring towns of Starkenberg and Tegkwitz are the places of origin of a castle-count dynasty "Erkenbertinger". In 1088 a witness was mentioned in a Naumburg document. Then from 1143–1171 the Reichsministeriale Erkenbert von Tegkwitz became known, who contributed to the development of the Ore Mountains . In 1222 a branch of the family referred to themselves as the Burgraves of Starkenberg . The branch died out in the 15th century and Starkenberg Castle was demolished after it was destroyed by the Hussites . After that, the newly built manor in Kostitz had inheritance jurisdiction over Starkenberg, Posa and Pöhla. The castle was demolished after the land reform in 1945, and the tenant house was the seat of the municipal administration until 2009. Since then, the municipality has been located in the renovated Gasthof Zur Linde . One chapel was demolished in 1559. A mill was built in 1705, but only a later dwelling of the miller from 1815 remains today.

Starkenberg belonged to the Wettin office of Altenburg until the 19th century , which was under the sovereignty of the following Ernestine duchies from the 16th century due to several divisions in the course of its existence : Duchy of Saxony (1554 to 1572), Duchy of Saxony-Weimar (1572 to 1603) , Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg (1603 to 1672), Duchy of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg (1672 to 1826). When the Ernestine duchies were reorganized in 1826, the place came back to the duchy of Saxony-Altenburg. After the administrative reform in the duchy, Starkenberg belonged to the eastern district (until 1900) and to the Altenburg district office (from 1900). From 1879 the Altenburg District Court and since 1906 the Meuselwitz District Court were legally responsible for the place. Between 1887 and 1972 the Meuselwitz – Ronneburg railway ran through Kostitz , although it was dismantled between Großröda and Meuselwitz due to lignite mining . The "Kostitz" stop was renamed "Starkenberg" in 1955. The station building is now a residential building with a restaurant.

From 1918 Starkenberg belonged to the Free State of Saxony-Altenburg , which was added to the State of Thuringia in 1920. In 1922 the place came to the district of Altenburg . On July 1, 1950, the communities Kostitz and Dölzig were incorporated. During the second district reform in the GDR in 1952, the existing states were dissolved and the districts were redesigned. Thus, the municipality Starkenberg came with the district Altenburg to the district of Leipzig , which since 1990 belonged to the district Altenburg Thuringia and opened in 1994 Altenburger in the district of the country. During the GDR era, on January 1, 1967, the place Pöhla and on January 1, 1974 the municipality Posa with the districts Neuposa and Kleinröda were incorporated. On December 1, 2008, the formerly independent communities Naundorf and Tegkwitz were incorporated into the Starkenberg community. The municipality of Großröda followed on January 1, 2012 . A planned merger with Rositz as part of the Thuringia regional reform in 2018 and 2019 has been put on hold for the time being.

Starkenberg Castle ground monument

Starkenberg Castle, ancestral seat of the Burgraves of Starkenberg , was originally located on a mountain spur in the middle of the village, today between the streets "Fleischerberg" and "Malzgasse". The Bergsporn area is now (as of 2018) built on with houses. It was placed under monument protection / ground monument protection around / before 1997 together with a preserved cellar of the castle. The castle cellar is a 24 m long, 3 m wide and 2 m high barrel vault, which is lined with sandstone blocks. The State Monuments Office dated the cellar vault to around 1430. The cellar is located on the private property "Malzgasse Nr.40" and is only accessible through an old house. Above ground there are no remnants of walls, (clearly identifiable) ditches or walls of the castle to be seen.
