history

The acid tower in Crossen: Saxon industrial history - secretly blown up in 2008

Crossen was first mentioned in 1219 under the name Crozne . Crozne means something like “braided”, which indicates the large population of willows on the Zwickauer Mulde . At that time, as an interest-bearing village, Crossen belonged to the Eisenberg monastery in Thuringia , to which it was subordinated by the Margrave Dietrich with a deed of donation . In 1254 it was handed over by Burgrave Erkenbert von Starkenberg to the Grünhain monastery , which exercised full jurisdiction from 1289. From 1399, Crossen had a village forge and in 1443 the first grinding mill was founded and operated. In the course of the introduction of the Reformation , Grünhain Monastery was secularized in 1533 . After its final dissolution, Crossen came under the administration of the Electoral Office of Zwickau in 1536 .

In 1571 the first parish tailor and in 1594 the first parish shepherd were mentioned. 1604 was first reported by a teacher. The first shoe repairer was mentioned for the first time in 1708 and the first carpenter in 1721. 1633 raged in Crossen plague and 1865/1866 Crossen was from the cholera struck. Since the cemetery at the church was too small at that time, the victims were buried in a new cemetery "Am Kuchel". In 1670 a paper mill was attached. Until 1856, Crossen belonged to the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon Office of Zwickau. In 1856, Crossen came to the Zwickau court office and in 1875 to the Zwickau administration . As early as 1867, Crossen had organized fire protection and in 1900 the volunteer fire brigade was founded. The town hall was inaugurated in 1926.

From the end of the 1940s, SAG Wismut processed uranium ore for the USSR in a large company located here . A hose conveyor leads from Crossen to the Helmsdorf sedimentation plant , where wastewater and sludge from ore processing was deposited. The uranium processing plant was completely demolished in the late 1990s. The rehabilitation program including the Helmsdorf tailings plant should be completed by 2018. Only the Crossen Halde recalls this part of the history of Zwickau. The former uranium processing site is part of the Muldenaue.

In 1952 Crossen was assigned to the Zwickau-Land district in the Chemnitz district (renamed the Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ). Since 1990, Crossen has belonged to the Saxon district of Zwickau, which was added to the district of Zwickauer Land in 1994 . After Crossen had entered into an administrative partnership with Schneppendorf in 1992 , it was incorporated into Crossen on January 1, 1994. On October 1, 1996, the Crossen community lost its independence and was incorporated into Zwickau. Today, Crossen belongs to the Zwickau-Nord district , has the official number 37 and a local council .

The last major floods in Crossen occurred in 1932, 1954, 2002 and 2013.
