geography
location
The district of Zwickau-Land was located in West Saxony and surrounded the city of Zwickau in the shape of a collar . The Zwickauer Mulde flowed through it.
Neighboring areas
The district of Zwickau-Land bordered in a clockwise direction in the north, beginning with the districts of Glauchau , Hohenstein-Ernstthal , Stollberg , Aue , Auerbach , Reichenbach and Werdau and the urban district of Zwickau .
landscape
The northern part of the district was in the low mountain range, which was taken here by the Erzgebirge basin. It is a slightly undulating landscape on average 300 m high, which is rarely covered with small forests. However, this picture changes south of Wilkau-Haßlau, where the first heights of the Voigtland and the Western Ore Mountains appear. The landscape becomes more lively and therefore more varied. Deciduous and coniferous forests and a gradual rise to an altitude of 400 m characterize this region. From south to north, the Zwickauer Mulde flows through the district in many turns. The settlements are piling up in their valley, and the old traffic routes also run here. The Pleiße rises near Ebersbrunn, although it leaves the district to the west of Zwickau.
history
The Zwickau administrative authority was established in the Kingdom of Saxony as early as 1874 and renamed the Zwickau district in 1939 . The district of Zwickau belonged to the state of Saxony after 1945 and thus to the GDR since 1949.
On July 25, 1952, a comprehensive district reform took place in the GDR , in which, among other things, the states lost their importance and new districts were founded. Parts of the district of Zwickau fell to the new districts of Auerbach , Reichenbach , Schmölln , Stollberg and Werdau . The Zwickau-Land district was formed from the remaining district area together with part of the Glauchau district. It was assigned to the Karl-Marx-Stadt district and the city of Zwickau became the seat of the district.
The Zwickau district gave up the following municipalities:
- Lichtenau to the Aue district
- 3 municipalities in the Auerbach district :
- Lauterhofen, Obercrinitz and Stangengrün.

During the first Saxon district reform , it was absorbed on August 1, 1994 in the new Zwickauer Land district .

economy
The proximity of the big city meant that the industrial companies had mainly settled in Zwickau. There were residential communities in the district, from which daily commuters poured into the city. Notable industries were found only in Wilkau-Haßlau (worsted spinning mills, confectionery, furniture) and in Kirchberg (cloth industry). In the Erzgebirge Basin in particular, there was increased agriculture. In the district area, 10 to 20% of those in work were employed in agriculture, especially in the large LPGs in Mülsen-Ortmannsdorf, Zschocken, Weißbach and Hartenstein. Important industrial companies were:
- VEB vehicle heating Kirchberg
- VEB Westsächsische Volltuchfabrik Kirchberg
- VEB Signaltechnik Wildenfels
- VEB confectionery factory Wesa Wilkau-Haßlau
- VEB Synthetex light fir
- the ore processing plant of SDAG Wismut in Crossen.
traffic
The district was connected to the GDR motorway network through the Plauen – Karl-Marx-Stadt motorway. The F 93 from Altenburg via Zwickau to Schneeberg , the F 173 from Plauen via Zwickau to Karl-Marx-Stadt and the F 175 from Zwickau to Werdau also served national road traffic . The district area was opened up by the railway lines Dresden – Zwickau – Werdau , Zwickau – Schwarzenberg and Zwickau – Falkenstein .
