About this picture

The Glauchau district was a district in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district of the GDR . From 1990 to 1994 it existed as the district of Glauchau in the Free State of Saxony . His area is now in the district of Zwickau . The seat of the district administration was in Glauchau .

geography

location

The third smallest district in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district was north of Zwickau and was traversed by the Zwickauer Mulde .

Neighboring areas

The district of Glauchau bordered clockwise in the north, beginning with the districts of Altenburg , Rochlitz , Karl-Marx-Stadt-Land (until 1953 and from 1990 Chemnitz-Land), Hohenstein-Ernstthal , Zwickau-Land , Werdau and Schmölln .

Natural space

The district town of Glauchau lay in a valley widening of the Zwickauer Mulde on the border between the Central Saxon loess loam area in the north and the Erzgebirge basin in the south. Around two thirds of the district belonged to the fertile plateaus of Central Saxony at an altitude of 260 to 300 m. The highest point of the district (340 m) was in the Rümpfwald. The Zwickauer Mulde flowed through the district from south-east to north-west in a 1 to 2 km wide valley. The deepest point was at Wolkenburg (208 m). The "valley of castles" (Waldenburg, Wolkenburg, Rochsburg, Wechselburg, Rochlitz, Colditz) began near Waldenburg in the deeply cut and narrow river valley of the Zwickauer Mulde. Landscape protection areas were designated in the Muldental and Glauchau (Erzgebirgsweg).

history

The circle Glauchau walked out of the county renamed in Glauchau on 1 January 1939, founded in 1874 Amtshauptmannschaft Glauchau forth. With the district reform of the GDR on July 25, 1952, the districts were formed and the districts were reorganized. The previous Glauchau district gave up roughly half of its communities: 19 in the eastern part to the newly formed Hohenstein-Ernstthal district and 7 communities in the southern Mülsengrund to the Zwickau district. One community moved to the Werdau district, but was reclassified from there before the end of the year. Two communities in the north of the district were incorporated into the Altenburg district, from which they were almost entirely enclosed. The district was assigned to the newly formed Karl-Marx-Stadt district, the district seat was Glauchau.
The old district of Glauchau submitted:

Bernsdorf i. Erzgeb., Callenberg b. Waldenburg, Falken, Gersdorf, Grumbach b. Waldenburg, Heinrichsort, Hermsdorf, Hohenstein-Ernstthal, Kuhschnappel, Langenberg, Langenchursdorf, Lichtenstein / Sa., Lobsdorf, Meinsdorf, Oberlungwitz, Reichenbach b. Waldenburg, Rödlitz and St. Egidien.

This is how the new Glauchau district was formed .

As a result of reclassifications across district boundaries and changes in the municipal area, the number of municipalities fell from 29 to 10 when the district was dissolved at the end of July 1994:

On 17 May 1990, the county was in the country circle Glauchau renamed. On the occasion of the reunification of the two German states, the district was assigned to the re-established state of Saxony in October 1990. During the first Saxon district reform the county Glauchau was on August 1, 1994 with the county Hohenstein-Ernstthal and parts of the district Chemnitz to district Chemnitzer Land pooled. This increased the area of the district considerably, but the two communities that had previously belonged to the district of Dennheritz and Schlunzig came to the district of Zwickauer Land .

economy

In the important industrial and agricultural district of the Karl-Marx-Stadt-Zwickau agglomeration, textile and mechanical engineering companies were of primary importance. For example, weaving mills, spinning mills, twisting mills, tricot and textile finishing plants were located in Glauchau. In addition to mechanical engineering companies, there was also a dairy and meat factory. About two thirds of the area was used for arable farming for forage crops and cereals. In Glauchau there was a dairy cattle facility for 2000 cows. An agrochemical center was located in Waldenburg. Significant companies were among others:

  • VEB United Cotton Spinning and Twisting Mills , Glauchau plant
  • VEB IFA Karosseriewerke Meerane (the chassis for the Trabant cars were manufactured here)
  • VEB Berliner Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik, BT Glauchau
  • VEB Textilwerke Palla Glauchau
  • VEB nitrogen works "Otto Buchwitz" Glauchau - production of man-made fibers
  • VEB Leuchtenbau Meerane
  • VEB Dampfkesselbau Meerane
  • VEB weaving mill Waldenburg

traffic

The area of the Glauchau district is well connected to the transport network. The Dresden – Werdau railway line and the Glauchau – Gößnitz , Glauchau – Stollberg and Glauchau – Waldenburg – Rochlitz – Leipzig lines meet in the former district town . In the Muldental, the former highway 175 runs from Döbeln to Zwickau. Further arteries are the long-distance roads F 93 (from Altenburg via Meerane to Zwickau ) and F 180 (from Altenburg via Waldenburg to Stollberg ). The Erfurt-Dresden motorway with the connection points Meerane and Glauchau runs through the district.
