geography

location

The Hohenstein-Ernstthal district was between Karl-Marx-Stadt and Zwickau . In terms of area, it was the smallest district in the GDR, but at the same time had the highest population density of all districts in the GDR.

Neighboring areas

The district of Hohenstein-Ernstthal bordered in a clockwise direction in the northwest on the districts of Glauchau , Karl-Marx-Stadt-Land , Stollberg , Zwickau-Land , Werdau and Schmölln .

history

On July 25, 1952, a comprehensive district reform took place in the GDR , in which, among other things, the states lost their importance and new districts were formed. 19 communities in the then Glauchau district and the Wüstenbrand community in the Chemnitz district formed the new Hohenstein-Ernstthal district . This was assigned to the newly formed Karl-Marx-Stadt district . The district seat was in the city of Hohenstein-Ernstthal.

Municipal area changes:

  • December 4, 1952 Hohndorf was reclassified from the Hohenstein-Ernstthal district to the Stollberg district
  • March 1, 1974 Incorporation of Grumbach (141105) into Callenberg (141102)
  • March 1, 1974 Incorporation of Meinsdorf (141114) into Langenberg (141110)

On May 17, 1990, the district was renamed the Hohenstein-Ernstthal district . On the occasion of the reunification of the two German states, the district was awarded to the re-established state of Saxony in October 1990 .
