politics

District Administrator

Until 1990 the office corresponded to that of the chairman of the council of the district .

economy

The Zschopau valley and especially the city of Zschopau had been an industrially highly developed area since the beginning of the 19th century. After the Second World War, the economy recovered fairly quickly, despite the extensive reparations payments to the Soviet Union . The largest employers were the Motorradwerke Zschopau with over 3500 employees and the DKK refrigerator factory in Scharfenstein with a branch in Niederschmiedeberg . Otherwise, the textile industry in particular shaped the region with large factories in Gornau , Gelenau / Erzgeb. , Venusberg and Zschopau, as well as a number of suppliers to the above Works. The paper mill in Wilischthal should also be mentioned . As a result of the high job density , the district had a larger number of commuters . Large areas of the district were used for agriculture by the agricultural production cooperatives of the individual towns. Another branch of the economy was tourism with a large number of FDGB holiday homes.

traffic

The district of Zschopau was accessed from the road side by the highway 174, today's federal highway 174 . On the rail side, the Zschopautalbahn from Flöha to Weipert was used for passenger and freight traffic. The narrow-gauge railways Schönfeld-Wiesa-Meinersdorf , Wilischthal-Thum and Wolkenstein-Jöhstadt existed in the side valleys of the Zschopau until the 1970s . Larger freight yards existed in Zschopau , Wilischthal and Wolkenstein .
