The first documentary mention of the place in a visitation report dates from 1539 as Hilmersdorff . It was probably founded in the second half of the 12th century by the Lords of Waldenburg . With the Reformation 1536/1537 the place came to the parish Wolkenstein.
From 1554 mining activities on Hilmersdorfer Flur can be proven. On July 11, 1582, through the purchase of four farms, each with a hoof, the Hilmersdorf manor was created as a man-made manor - with the exception of seven farms, all other farms in the village had to do labor. A school is mentioned for the first time in 1632, and a separate school building was built in 1886.

August Schumann mentions Hilmersdorf in 1817 in the State Lexicon of Saxony regarding, among other things:

"There is an official manor here, to which the village belongs and which, by virtue of an order of March 5, 1680, the mountain shelf to the lower metals, z. B. tin, iron, copper and the little mountain toe. This village has over 500 inhabitants with 200 cows. There are many linen weavers and hosiery workers among the inhabitants, who deliver an average of 70  shock canvas and 300 dozen stockings, gloves and hats a year. "

The place belonged to the office of Wolkenstein until 1856 . In 1910 Hilmersdorf received its own cemetery with an Art Nouveau cemetery chapel - an organ was not installed until 1990.
After the First World War , several stocking factories were built in the village, and the town hall was built in 1929. An air raid on February 15, 1945 destroyed 17 buildings and killed one person.

In the course of the land reform , the possessions of the manor were divided among new farmers and other people, the manor house and the distillery were later demolished. In 1953 the LPG "Neues Leben Hilmersdorf" was founded, in 1960 the LPG "Frühauf". In 1965 the LPG New Life merged with the eponymous company from Selva, and in 1971 the LPG Frühauf followed.
In 1975–79 stables were built north of the village for the intensive keeping of up to 2,000 dairy cows.
In 1982 the school was finally closed.

Due to the favorable location of the town in terms of traffic, not far from the intersection of two federal highways, the municipality at that time decided to create an industrial area between the western end of the village and the B 174, which was opened up in 1993. In the period that followed, around 20 companies settled there.

On January 1, 1999, the previously independent municipalities of Falkenbach, Gehringswalde, Hilmersdorf and Schönbrunn merged with the city of Selva, Hilmersdorf became a district of Selva.
