The first documentary mention of Hopphegarten dates back to April 8, 1386. Margrave Wilhelm I of Meißen assigned the rule of Scharfenstein with associated villages, including Hopfgarten, as a widow's residence to the widow Anargs von Waldenburg.
The first mining activities are documented in 1493, and activities were discontinued in 1808.
On April 18, 1575, Haubold von Einsiedel founded the parish Großolbersdorf, to which Hopfgarten and Grünau were assigned. A church elementary school was set up with the parish.

In 1855, Karl Gottlob Fleischer began producing stockings on a hand loom at Dorfstrasse 9. By 1864 the business was expanded to 5 looms. The implementation of the drive by means of steam engines took place in the same year. The conversion to knitting machines was completed around 1900. In the mid-1920s, the company had 22 employees and was therefore an important employer. A gradual increase in the production volume and the modernization of the machine technology required additional space. As a result, the company building was raised by two floors in 1927. In 1972 the company was forced to join the "VEB Strumpfkombinat ESDA". With the bankruptcy of the stocking combine as a result of the political change in 1990, the plant in Hopfgarten was shut down. The then operations manager Jochen Sieber received his property back by transferring it back. In 1991 the "Siebert Sport Strumpffabrik GmbH" was established in the same place and is still in production today.

In 1862 the first road connection between Scharfenstein and Hopfgarten was created. Until then, there were only dirt roads to Drebach and Großolbersdorf. Then began the construction of the Flöha – Annaberg railway line, which was opened in 1866. However, the local council rejected the establishment of a stop in Hopfgarten - as an alternative, a stop was set up at Floßplatz.
In 1874, Hopfgarten and Grünau were incorporated into the newly formed Marienberg District Administration. In the same year, a new school was built on Dorfstrasse, where from then on the students from Grünau were also taught.
In 1888 Karl Wendler started the production of wood pulp and cardboard in Hauptstrasse 15. On February 2, 1946, a large fire destroyed parts of the plant and on June 30 of that year the “wood pulp and cardboard factory OHG” was expropriated. From 1963 the systems were part of the “VEB DKK Scharfenstein” . In 1990 this stopped production. The systems were bought by Johannes Wendler, who renovated the hydropower plant on the Zschopau in 1994, commissioned it in 1995 and sold the former factory.
As early as 1898, a new school was built on Uferstrasse, 65 students were taught in two classes. In 1960 the school was finally closed.
In 1898/99 a connection was built along the Zschopau to Floßplatz to create a connection to the Zschopau Valley Railway. The Royal General Directorate of the Saxon State Railroad had meanwhile rejected requests from the municipality to set up a stop in the village.
In 1910 Grünau became a district of Hopfgarten. In 1913 the wooden footbridge over the Zschopau was replaced by a stone arch bridge, thus replacing the ford with the Zschopau.

In 1994 Hopfgarten became a member of the Grüner Grund administrative association . On October 1, 1998, Hopfgarten and Grünau were incorporated into Großolbersdorf and thus left the administrative association again.
