history
Gersdorf was founded around 1169 as a typical Waldhufendorf . However, this date is fictional and cannot be confirmed in a document; it was chosen to host an 800th anniversary celebration in 1969. The Gersdorfer Church was first mentioned in documents in 1320. It is documented that Franconian settlers came to the country around this time. The place was named after the locator Gerhard or Gerfried.
With the transition from the 14th to the 15th century, the residents who belonged to the Schönburger domain slowly came into subjection to the inheritance .
In the 19th century, coal mining in the Lugau-Oelsnitz coalfield and textile industry brought a significant industrial boom. While mining was stopped in 1944, the textile industry continued into the GDR era . Between 1913 and 1960 the Hohenstein-Ernstthal - Gersdorf - Oelsnitz regional tram ran through the town.
