Oberwiera is a municipality in the Free State of Saxony in the north of the Zwickau district . It is part of the Waldenburg administrative community .

Geographical location
The municipality of Oberwiera is located in the north of the Saxon district of Zwickau on the border with the Free State of Thuringia ( Altenburger Land ). The community is located in the headwaters of the Wiera , a tributary of the Pleiße .

Neighboring communities are Remse (south), Schönberg (east) and the city of Waldenburg (west) in the district of Zwickau and Nobitz (north) in the Thuringian district of Altenburger Land .

Community structure
The municipality of Oberwiera consists of the districts of Harthau , Neukirchen , Niederwiera , Oberwiera, Röhrsdorf and Wickersdorf . About half of the community's residents live in the main town of Oberwiera.
The “Holzhäuser” settlement is listed as a district on many maps, but this is incorrect. The wooden houses are a series of shorter side streets of Waldenburger Straße and encompass the southernmost part of Oberwiera. In this direction (seen from the town center), the district of Wickersdorf follows. There is a structural gap of around 200 meters (as the crow flies) between the wooden houses and Wickersdorf.
The shortest road connection (exit to entrance) between the individual districts is usually only a few hundred meters. The only exception is the Oberwiera – Neukirchen route, which is due to the layout of the road. The air line is significantly shorter.
history
The first documentary mention of Oberwiera is dated to 1254. Accordingly, Oberwiera is as old as the neighboring town of Waldenburg . The mention refers to a "Conradus de Wira", in 1279 a "Witego plebanus in Wiera" was mentioned. A church dedicated to the Archangel Michael has existed in Oberwiera since the 14th century . The parish of Oberwiera included the places Oberwiera, Wickersdorf (Saxon part) and Gähsnitz (Saxon part).
Oberwiera has been mentioned as a manor house since it was first mentioned in documents in 1254. In 1531 a Vorwerk and from 1750 a manor is mentioned. This was owned by the following noble families until the 19th century: Rentzel (17th century), Schmertzing and Kotzau (both 18th century). After the death of Freiherr von Kotzau in 1867, the sisters were Countess von der Recke - Volmerstein and the Verw. Baroness von Metzsch heirs and last noble owner of the Oberwiera manor. They sold it to the landowner Gottfried Winter in 1868. The greater part of Oberwiera was under the manorial rule of the manor Oberwiera, which in turn was counted to the Schönburg rule of Waldenburg .
The smaller part of Oberwiera was under electoral Saxon sovereignty . It was administered by the Schönburg lordship of Remse , which was also under electoral suzerainty , and which arose from the possession of Remse Monastery, which was dissolved in the course of the Reformation in 1533 . In this area in the southeast of Oberwiera, the "wooden houses" were built in the 18th century. They were called "under the fir wood" in older entries in the church registers because they were only built later next to the manorial forest. In the 19th century, the Saxon part of Oberwiera consisted of ten houses, while the Schönburg part of 85 houses.
In the 18th century there were six underground healing springs north-west of Oberwiera that were said to have healing powers. As a result, a lively bathing business developed in Oberwiera for a while. The water was also brought into the area in bottles and barrels. After a few decades, however, the demand for the Gesundbrunnen decreased, as the springs could not be confirmed to have any medicinal properties.
The relationship between the Kingdom of Saxony and the House of Schönburg was reorganized in 1835. The rule of Remse, which was under Saxon feudal rule, to which part of Oberwiera also belonged, was placed under the administration of the royal Saxon office of Zwickau . On September 25, 1856, the judicial powers of the Remse rule were ceded by the Schönburgers to the Saxon state. Since then, Oberwiera (Saxon Ant.) Was administered by the Remse court office like the other associated towns until the administration in the Kingdom of Saxony was reorganized in 1875 . From 1875 Oberwiera (Saxon Ant.) Was initially part of the Zwickau administration . In the Schönburg part of Oberwiera, the fron of the local manor and the parish tithing were abolished by some farmers in 1836 . After an administrative reform was carried out in the area of the Schönburg recession in 1878, the Saxon and Schönburg parts of Oberwiera with the independent manor district of Oberwiera came to the newly founded Saxon administration Glauchau in 1880 .
From 1918 Oberwiera belonged to the Free State of Saxony. The manor district of Oberwiera was incorporated into the municipality of Oberwiera after 1924. On July 1, 1950, the places Harthau and Neukirchen , which were once part of Thuringia, were incorporated into the municipality of Oberwiera. The municipality of Oberwiera came to the Glauchau district in the Chemnitz district as a result of the second district reform in the GDR in 1952 (renamed the Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953). On March 1, 1964, Wickersdorf , which was once part of Thuringia, and the formerly completely Thuringian municipality of Niederwiera with its district Röhrsdorf were incorporated . The municipality of Oberwiera came to the Saxon district of Glauchau in 1990 , which was added to the district of Chemnitzer Land in 1994 and in 2008 in the district of Zwickau.

The brown background of the coat of arms of Oberwiera represents the arable land of the municipality, which symbolizes the dominant agriculture in the municipality. The six ears of wheat on the blue harvest sky in the upper third represent the six districts of the municipality of Oberwiera. The two lower thirds indicate with the state colors green / white and red / white the historical affiliation of the districts to Saxony or Thuringia and the Schönburg rulers . The Wiera, which rises in the municipality, is represented by the blue meandering line in the two lower thirds of the coat of arms.

- The closest junction to a motorway is Glauchau -Ost ( Bundesautobahn 4 ).
- With the further construction of the federal autobahn 72 (Chemnitz-Leipzig) one will reach it via Waldenburg and the federal highway 175 .
Rail connection
Oberwiera has no connection to the rail network, but is or was surrounded by several railway lines in the vicinity. The Leipzig – Hof railway line and the Central Germany connection ( Glauchau – Schönbörnchen – Gößnitz and Gößnitz – Gera railway lines ) intersect at Gößnitz station in Thuringia . The Glauchau (Sachs) station is also on the Central-Germany connection ( Glauchau-Schönbörnchen – Gößnitz railway ) and the Saxony-Franconian Magistrale ( Dresden – Werdau railway ). The currently largely unused stretch of the Muldentalbahn runs through the neighboring town of Waldenburg . The Altenburg – Langenleuba – Oberhain railway , which was closed and dismantled in 1998, was located north of the municipality .
