geography

Geographical location

Niederwiera is located in the northern municipality of Oberwiera. The Wiera , a tributary of the Pleiße, flows through the village .

In the north Niederwiera borders on the Free State of Thuringia ( Altenburger Land ). Before 1950, the situation was exactly the opposite: the Thuringian Niederwiera was surrounded by Saxon towns in the north, west and south. Since the Saxon places in the north came to Thuringia in 1952 and the community of Niedewiera to Saxony in 1957, the current state border in this area has changed significantly.

The square village of Niederwiera was first mentioned in 1336 as "Wira" or "Wyra". As early as 1279, a "Witego plebanus in Wiera" was named, which probably refers to the neighboring town of Oberwiera. Niederwiera, like its neighboring village Röhrsdorf, originally belonged to the property of the Grünhain Monastery in the Western Ore Mountains in Altenburger Land . The Niederwiera church was built when Niederwiera was founded. The parish Niederwiera included the places Niederwiera, Röhrsdorf , Harthau , Heiersdorf , Wickersdorf ( altenburg. Part ) , Gähsnitz / Jesenitz (altenburg. Part) and the daughter church in Neukirchen , which was in the Saxon part of the place.

In contrast to the Schönburg Oberwiera, Niederwiera belonged to the Wettin office of Altenburg , which from the 16th century onwards was under the sovereignty of the following Ernestine duchies due to several divisions in the course of its existence : Duchy of Saxony (1554 to 1572), Duchy of Saxony-Weimar (1572 to 1603) , Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg (1603 to 1672), Duchy of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg (1672 to 1826). When the Ernestine Duchies were reorganized in 1826, Niederwiera again became part of the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg. After the administrative reform in the duchy, the town, which had 171 inhabitants around 1895, belonged to the eastern district (until 1900) and to the Altenburg district office (from 1900). From 1918 Niederwiera belonged to the Free State of Saxony-Altenburg , which was incorporated into the State of Thuringia in 1920. In 1922 the place came to the district of Altenburg . In contrast to the three present-day Oberwieraer districts, which were divided between Saxony and Thuringia until 1928, the completely Thuringian Niederwiera as well as its neighboring village Röhrsdorf remained untouched by the exchange of territory and the border adjustment between the Free State of Saxony and the State of Thuringia in 1928.

On July 1, 1950, Röhrsdorf was incorporated into Niederwiera. Even after the second district reform in the GDR in 1952, the Niederwiera community with its Röhrsdorf district remained in the Altenburg district in the Leipzig district . It was not until January 1, 1957 that the community was reclassified to the Glauchau district in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district , which ended its historical affiliation with the Thuringian Altenburger Land. From an ecclesiastical point of view, the former Altenburg parish of Niederwiera now belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Regional Church of Saxony . In the 1970s, the only way to prevent major damage to the church was by tearing down the dome.

On March 1, 1964, the municipality of Niederwiera with its district Röhrsdorf was incorporated into the municipality of Oberwiera together with Wickersdorf . Therefore, Niederwiera now represents one of the six ears of corn in the municipality's coat of arms. As a district of the municipality of Oberwiera, Niederwiera came to the Saxon district of Glauchau in 1990 , which was added to the district of Chemnitzer Land in 1994 and Zwickau in 2008.
