The place Tettau was mentioned in 1181 as "Thetowe". However, it was already settled by Sorbs around the year 500. In Tettau there was a manor to which, in addition to Tettau itself, the neighboring towns of Wünschendorf and Oberdorf also belonged. In 1492, Hans von Hagenest sold the Tettau manor including accessories to the Remse monastery , which was dissolved in the course of the Reformation in 1533. Ten years later, Tettau and its neighboring towns were bought by the Lords of Schönburg in 1543 . Since then, Tettau has belonged as an official village to the Schönburg rule of Remse , which, however, was under Wettin suzerainty as a feudal rule . As part of the administrative reorganization of the Kingdom of Saxony, Tettau was subordinated to the Zwickau district administration as part of the Schönburg feudal lordship of Remse in 1835. The feudal lordship of Remse and its locations has since been administratively administered by the royal Saxon office of Zwickau .

From 1856 Tettau belonged to the Remse court office and from 1875 initially to the Zwickau administration . After an administrative reform was carried out in the area of the Schönburg recession in 1878, Tettau and the entire former judicial district of Remse came to the newly founded Saxon governorate of Glauchau in 1880 .

On July 1, 1950, Wünschendorf and Oberdorf were incorporated into Tettau. The municipality of Tettau in turn was incorporated into the municipality of Schönberg on January 1, 1974 . As a result of the second district reform in the GDR , Tettau came to the Glauchau district in the Chemnitz district in 1952 (renamed the Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ), which was continued as the Saxon Glauchau district from 1990 and in the Chemnitzer Land district in 1994 and in the district in 2008 Zwickau rose.
