Köthel was mentioned in 1363 as "Kottelin". However, the place was already settled by Sorbs around the year 500. In contrast to the other current districts of the community of Schönberg, which belonged to various Schönburg lordships , Köthel was in the Wettin office of Altenburg , which was under the sovereignty of the following Ernestine duchies from the 16th century due to several divisions in the course of its existence : Duchy of Saxony (1554 to 1572), Duchy of Saxony-Weimar (1572 to 1603), Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg (1603 to 1672), Duchy of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg (1672 to 1826). The manorial rule over Köthel was divided in 1548 between the noble family from Ende zu Ponitz , the Bergerkloster zu Altenburg and the Schoenburg rulers. Around 1818, a part of Köthel as an official village was directly subordinate to the Altenburg district office, the other part belonged to the manor of the Schönburg manor Hainichen .

When the Ernestine Duchies were reorganized in 1826, Köthel again became part of the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg. After the administrative reform in the duchy, the place belonged to the Eastern District (until 1900) and to the Ronneburg District Office (from 1900). From 1918 the village belonged to the Free State of Saxony-Altenburg , which was added to the State of Thuringia in 1920. In 1922 it came to the district of Altenburg .

During the second district reform in the GDR in 1952, the existing states were dissolved and the districts were redesigned. Thus Köthel came with the newly formed district Schmölln to the district of Leipzig . On January 1, 1957, Köthel was reclassified to the Glauchau district in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district , which ended its historical affiliation with the Thuringian Altenburger Land . It was incorporated into Schönberg eight years later on March 1, 1965. As a district of the community of Schönberg, Köthel had belonged to the Saxon district of Glauchau since 1990 , which was added to the Chemnitzer Land district in 1994 and Zwickau in 2008.
