history
Schlunzig was first mentioned in a document in 1219. As an originally Slavic round village , the settlement was continued by German settlers in the course of the development of the Pleißnerland under the rule of Schönburg . Until the 19th century, Schlunzig was an official place of the Schönburg dominion of Glauchau, which was formed in 1256 . After the division of Glauchau in 1681, Schlunzig belonged to the Hinterglauchau district . The "gossip mill" was first mentioned in 1521. After an administrative reform was also carried out in the area of the Schönburg recession in 1878, Schlunzig came to the newly established Glauchau administration , which comprised most of the Schönburg recession. Between 1885 and 1951 the narrow-gauge railway Mosel – Ortmannsdorf (Mülsengrundbahn) passed Schlunzig south without stopping. It had its starting point in the " Bahnhof Mosel " on the Dresden – Werdau railway line . Today the "Bimmelbahnweg", which is located on the former route, is reminiscent of the narrow-gauge railway .
Through the second district reform in the GDR in 1952, Schlunzig was assigned to the Glauchau district in the Chemnitz district (renamed the Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ). Between 1979 and 1989 the assembly plant of VEB Sachsenring and the cardan shaft plant were built to the west of the town. The foundation stone for the new VW plant west of the town was laid in 1990. Since 1990, Schlunzig has belonged to the Saxon district of Glauchau, but came to the district of Zwickauer Land when the district reform took place in 1994 . In modern times, Schlunzig is shaped by the Volkswagen factory, 65 percent of which is on Schlunzig. The incorporation of the municipality of Schlunzig into the city of Zwickau took place on January 1, 1999, although the residents had previously voted against it by referendum.
