history

The history of what is now the Reichenbacher Straße and Freiheitsiedlung district began in the 19th century. At that time the eastern part of the corridor belonged to the municipality of Marienthal , which was incorporated into Zwickau on October 1, 1902. The western part then belonged to the community of Lichtentanne .

In the 19th century, hard coal, clay and gravel were mined in the area of today's district. Shafts of the Zwickau coal field were u. a. the “Help God Shaft” (sunk in 1851), the “Blessing God Shaft” (sunk in 1841) and the “Citizens Shaft” (sunk in 1841). With the opening of the Zwickau main station and the connection to the newly opened section Crimmitschau - Werdau of the Leipzig – Hof railway line , the city of Zwickau was connected to the railway network on September 18, 1845. As early as 1847, the first coal pits were connected to the rail network via the “Bürgererschachtbahn”. The Zwickau-Cainsdorf State Coal Railway followed in 1854, and in 1858 it became the Schwarzenberg – Zwickau railway. Furthermore, in 1858 the Chemnitz – Zwickau section of the Dresden – Werdau railway was put into operation. Finally, in 1875, the Zwickau – Falkenstein railway followed. The large railway facilities in the north of today's district were supplemented in 1908 by the opening of the Zwickau Reichsbahn repair shop.

Maxhütte workers' settlement in Zwickau

The area west of the city of Zwickau was used by numerous businesses in the 19th century, for example a steam sawmill, a steam beer brewery, a worsted spinning mill, and an aircraft repair plant. In the area belonging to the municipality of Lichtentanne, the Maxhütte steelworks ( König-Albert-Werk ) opened in 1898 and was in operation until 1930. To the west of the steelworks, the Maxhütte workers' settlement was built around 1898 and is now a listed building in its entirety. Hard coal mining largely came to a standstill in the first half of the 20th century. While the Segen-Gottes-Schacht had already stopped production in 1918, the Help-of-God-Schacht followed in 1925 and in 1930 Citizen Bay II. Only Citizen Bay I was in operation until 1960. On April 1, 1926, the Zwickau airfield opened on the "Schmelzer-Wiesen" .

The first territorial change in the district took place in 1939. On April 1, 1939, Maxhütte and Brand were reclassified from Lichtentanne to Zwickau. During the Second World War , the present part of the city was the target of Allied bombardments due to the large number of factories and railway facilities. On May 12, 1944, the airfield on which the Gustav Basser aircraft repair plant had been located since 1938 was the target of American bombers. The factory was badly damaged. The underground repair shops were finally blown up in 1947 by the Soviet occupying forces. The airfield could only be reopened in 1953.

As a result of the political turnaround in 1989/90, today's district is in a state of change due to its large number of different commercial and industrial companies. Due to the very good transport connections, the district is very suitable for commercial settlement. This will u. a. via Reichenbacher Straße (B173) in east-west direction, Olzmannstraße in north-south direction and the newly built central route S293, which provides a direct connection to the A 72 (motorway exit Zwickau-West) and the district Marienthal and the B175 on the city limits of Werdau was created. An industrial railway track leads from the Deutsche Bahn tracks in the northeast of the district into the district (former Bürgererschachtbahn). The Zwickau Reichsbahn repair shop, which opened in 1908, was demolished in 2016 after it was closed in 2015. A new correctional facility for the Free States of Saxony and Thuringia is being built on the site . Furthermore, u. a. the nationally important VW education institute will be located on Reichenbacher Strasse.

Houses in the freedom settlement of Zwickau

At the present time, the Reichenbacher Straße and Freiheitsiedlung district is predominantly commercial and industrial. In addition to intact structures, however, there are also fallow areas, for example on the Galgendrundbach and the coal mining areas. Various smaller commercial enterprises have now settled on the former locations of large companies. Larger housing estates are located in the district to the west with the "Freiheitssiedlung" (reclassified from Lichtentanne to Zwickau on January 1, 1999) and the listed workers' estate "Maxhütte" (reclassified from Lichtentanne to Zwickau on April 1, 1939). In the east there is a contiguous residential area in the area “Wilkestrasse” / “Mittelgrundstrasse” / “Friedrich-Meyer-Strasse”. Due to the high pollution levels on “Reichenbacher Straße”, the aim is to reduce residential use in the eastern part of the city between Olzmannstraße and the viaduct of the Schwarzenberg – Zwickau railway line. In return, the conditions for the settlement of industry and commerce in this area are to be significantly improved.

traffic

The main traffic axis of the district is the federal highway 173 , via which the traffic from the Zwickau city center reaches the state highway 293 and the federal highway 72 (junction "Zwickau-West"). This is crossed by "Olzmannstrasse", on which the traffic between Planitz and Marienthal passes the district.

The district is framed by railway lines in the west, north and east. In the west this is the Zwickau – Falkenstein , in the north the Dresden – Werdau railway line and the Schwarzenberg – Zwickau railway line in the east . The Zwickau Central Station is located northeast of the district. In the past, there was a RAW stop in the north of what is now the district, which was only intended for Reichsbahn employees “7. October". In the west of the district there was the “Zwickau Reichenbacher Straße” stop between 1949 and 1985, at that time still in the corridor of the community of Lichtentanne.

The Zwickau airfield , which is operated by the Aero Club Zwickau, is located in the district.

In the area of public transport , the Maxhütte settlement in the district is connected to the city center by bus line 29 of the municipal transport company Zwickau .
