history

Forerunner of the Altenburg District Court between 1854 and 1879

The Altenburg District Court's predecessors were the Altenburg I, Altenburg II, Lucka and Altenburg City Court offices, which were formed as lower administrative and judicial authorities for most of the previous Altenburg District Office in the eastern district when the sub-authorities in the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg were reorganized in 1854 .

The Lucka court office responsible for the north-western part of the former Altenburg district office was abolished in 1874 and subordinated to the neighboring Altenburg II court office. In 1876 the two court offices and the Altenburg city court lost their administrative tasks to the new Altenburg administrative district . The three courts initially continued to function as judicial authorities. On May 1, 1879, the Altenburg City Court was merged with the Altenburg I and II court offices to form the Altenburg District Court.

On the occasion of the introduction of the Reich Court Constitution Act on October 1, 1879, the Altenburg District Court was continued within the framework of the Reich law.

With effect from January 1, 1906, an independent district court district with its seat in Meuselwitz was established from the northwestern part of the Altenburg district court . On January 1, 1952, the district courts of Meuselwitz and Schmölln were lifted and their entire district was assigned to the district court of Altenburg. With the administrative reform that took place in the GDR in 1952 and the associated abolition of the district courts, the Altenburg district court was repealed. Successors were the district courts of Altenburg and Schmölln .

Established in 1993

In 1993, the district courts were reintroduced in Thuringia and the Altenburg district court was newly established. It is subordinate to the Gera regional court .
