The Frauenburg is the ruin of a medieval spur castle south of Sonnenberg-Winnenberg and Frauenberg in the Birkenfeld district in Rhineland-Palatinate . The castle stands on a narrow mountain spur not far from the Nahe . The mountain spur is formed by the Aubach and the Ellenbach.

history

The Frauenburg was built before 1327 by the Counts of Sponheim and belonged to the back county. It served the Countess Loretta von Sponheim from 1331 as a widow's seat after she passed the government business to her son Johann III. had passed. The Frauenburg was later the official residence of a local bailiff. The castle was destroyed in 1673 in the so-called wild-catching feud by Lorraine troops. The Frauenburg is not identical to the castle near Birkenfeld, built by Baldwin of Luxembourg in 1328 .

description

The castle has a rectangular floor plan. There are round towers at the corners and on the north-eastern long side . The tower on the long side protected the former entrance. The round towers on the attack side are almost fully preserved, in front of which there is a neck ditch . Maintenance and renovation work, some of which differ from the original system, was completed in 1988. In 2013 an extensive restoration to preserve the building fabric was started, which was concluded with a big celebration in the castle complex on August 30, 2015. The 33 m high south tower can be climbed as an observation tower by arrangement .
