Stanislav Varga (born October 8, 1972 in Lipany ) is a former Slovak football player .

Career

The 1.82-meter-tall defender began his career in 1993 with 1. FC Tatran Prešov before moving to ŠK Slovan Bratislava in 1998 . For the 2000/01 season he moved to the Premier League for AFC Sunderland . At the end of the 2001/02 season he played on loan for West Bromwich Albion . Due to a long injury period, he was unable to build on his old strengths. From 2003 to 2006 he was under contract with the club Celtic Glasgow . On August 31, 2006 he returned to Sunderland, the club was coached by Roy Keane . Roy Keane is a former colleague from the Celtic Club. The club bought Stanislav and Ross Wallace for a total of 1.1 million euros. His more powerful use in defense made him a crowd favorite. After a loan period in 2008 with Burnley FC and completed ten league games there, Varga ended his active career. Since then he has been working as a trainer in his home country.

From 1997 to 2006 Varga played for the Slovak national team in 54 games (2 goals).
