Lipany (before 1948 "Lipiany"; German Siebenlinden , Hungarian Héthárs , Latin Septemtiliae ) is a small town in eastern Slovakia .
It is located in the upper valley of the Torysa at the mouth of the Lipany brook in the middle of the Šariš valley between the Čergov in the north and the Šarišská vrchovina in the south.
history
The place was built before the 11th century, but was devastated by the Mongol invasion in 1241. The place was rebuilt by German colonists; the lands were mentioned in 1287, the place itself was first mentioned in writing in 1312 as Septem Tyliis , then in 1315 with the German name Sybunlendum . For a long time it belonged to the rule of Kamenica and the Tarczay family and was a market and trading place. In the 16th century it was granted city rights and from 1909 to 1924 it was even the seat of a district administration.
Until 1918, the city in Sáros County was part of the Kingdom of Hungary , then it came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia and since 1993 it has belonged to today's Slovakia.
