Oľšov (until 1927 Slovak and "Oľšovce"; Hungarian Olysó ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 381 inhabitants (December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Sabinov , a district of the Prešovský kraj , as well as to the traditional Šariš landscape .
geography
The municipality is located in the Spišsko-šarišské medzihorie mountain range on the Hanovec brook in the catchment area of the Upper Torysa . The center of the village is at an altitude of 468 m nm and is eight kilometers from Lipany and 19 kilometers from Sabinov .
Neighboring communities are Vislanka in the north, Krivany in the east, Torysa in the south, Šarišské Dravce in the west and Krásna Lúka in the northwest.
history
Oľšov was first mentioned in writing as Olsowa in 1309 and was then part of the territory of Torysa. The place has been owned by families such as Berzeviczy , Tahy and others over the centuries . In 1787 the village had 30 houses and 282 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 42 houses and 327 inhabitants who were employed as grain traders, farmers and cattle farmers.
The place in Sáros County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In the first Czechoslovak Republic, Oľšov was an agricultural village. After the Second World War, part of the population worked in industrial plants in cities such as Lipany and Košice .

According to the 2011 census, 389 people lived in Oľšov, including 386 Slovaks . Three residents did not provide any information about their ethnicity .
383 residents professed to the Roman Catholic Church and one resident to the Greek Catholic Church. Three residents were non-denominational and the denomination of two residents was not determined.
