Nižný Slavkov (German lower hose , Hungarian Alsószalók ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 854 inhabitants (December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Sabinov , a district of the Prešovský kraj , as well as to the traditional Šariš landscape .
geography
The village is located between the Leutschau Mountains to the west and the Bachureň Mountains to the east of the village, on the upper reaches of the Slavkovský creek . The center of the village is located at an altitude of 516 m nm and is 15 kilometers from Lipany , 20 kilometers from Spišské Podhradie and 26 kilometers from Sabinov .
Neighboring municipalities are Brezovička in the north, Vysoká in the northeast, Dubovica and briefly Renčišov in the east, Lipovce in the southeast, Vyšný Slavkov and Bijacovce in the south and Brutovce in the west.
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1214 and derives its name from the Slavic personal name Slavek . At that time there was a church and 12 houses in the village. In 1322 Nižný Slavkov was given the right to hold markets once a week. In 1427 50 porta are recorded, which at that time corresponded to a large village. Over the centuries, the families of Tarczay , Semsey , Bornemissza , Segney , Berzeviczy and the Spiš Chapter were important landowners .
In 1600 the village had 40 houses and, in addition to a church and parish, also a school and mill. In 1722 and 1726 large parts of Nižný Slavkov burned down. In 1828 there were 152 houses and 1,138 inhabitants.
Until 1918, the place in Sharosh County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Nižný Slavkov had 819 inhabitants, including 624 Slovaks , 156 Roma and one Moravian and one Russian . 37 residents gave no information on ethnicity .
763 residents supported the Roman Catholic Church and six residents supported the Greek Catholic Church. Two residents had no denomination and the denomination of 48 residents was not determined.
Buildings and monuments
- Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin from the end of the 13th century, originally in the Gothic style, partly designed in the Renaissance style in 1647. The former Anna church from the early 13th century is now a side chapel.
- Holy Family Chapel from the 13th century, was built after the Mongol invasion
