Uzovský Šalgov (until 1927 Slovak "Šalgov"; Hungarian Pusztasalgó - until 1907 Úszsalgó ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 632 inhabitants (December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Sabinov , a district of the Prešovský kraj , as well as to the traditional Šariš landscape .

The village is located in the Spišsko-šarišské medzihorie mountains on the eastern edge of the Bachureň Mountains by the Šalgov brook , at the point where it receives the smaller tributary Šalgovec . The area lies in the catchment area of ​​the Torysa . The center of the village is at an altitude of 365  m nm and is four kilometers from Sabinov .

Neighboring municipalities are Pečovská Nová Ves in the north, Ražňany in the east and south, Uzovské Pekľany in the west and Červenica pri Sabinove in the north-west.

history

Emmerich Church in the village

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1323 as Totthfalu and at that time it was an estate of the Tekule family . The name literally means "Slovak village" and is said to have existed as early as the 14th century. The current place name first appears in 1337 in the form Solgou . In 1427 19 Porta were taxed in a tax register , so it was a medium-sized village. Later the inhabitants became impoverished, so that in 1567 only two portals were due and in 1600 there were 14 houses, a church and a parish, and possibly also a school. In the 16th century the Úsz family became , which is also reflected in the place name. In 1787 the village had 34 houses and 200 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 49 houses and 390 inhabitants who were employed as farmers. In the 19th century, the owners came from the Semsey and Péchy families .

Until 1918/1919 the place in Sáros County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. The place burned down during the fighting between the Czechoslovak Army and the Red Army of the Hungarian Soviet Republic in 1919. In the first Czechoslovak Republic, the inhabitants worked as farmers, fruit growers, cattle farmers and, seasonally, as forest workers. After the Second World War, part of the population worked in industrial plants in cities such as Prešov and Sabinov.

According to the 2011 census, Uzovský Šalgov had 609 inhabitants, 586 of whom were Slovaks and one Russian and one Czech . 21 residents gave no information on ethnicity .

569 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, ten residents to the Greek Catholic Church and one resident each to the Evangelical Church AB and one to the Orthodox Church. Six residents had no denomination and the denomination of 22 residents was not determined.
