Drienica (until 1948 Slovak "Soma", Hungarian Felsősom - until 1907 Som ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 753 inhabitants (December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Sabinov , a district of the Prešovský kraj , as well as to the traditional Šariš landscape .

Drienica

The municipality is located on the southern slope of the Čergov Mountains in the Torysa catchment area . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 473  m nm and is four kilometers from Sabinov .

Neighboring municipalities are Olejníkov in the north, Šarišské Sokolovce in the northeast, Jakubovany in the east and southeast, Sabinov in the south, Červená Voda in the west and Sabinov (cadastral municipality Zálesie) in the northwest.

Church in Drienica

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1343 as Sum and was in the dominion of Svinia . In 1427 a tax of 34 Porta was due, so it was a large village. In 1787 the village had 56 houses and 337 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 62 houses and 475 inhabitants who were employed as shepherds, farmers and forest workers.

The place in Sáros County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. Even in the first Czechoslovak Republic, the traditional main sources of income did not change. After the Second World War, part of the population commuted to the industrial plants in Sabinov, Prešov and Košice .

According to the 2011 census, 714 people lived in Drienica, 685 of them Slovaks and 13 Russian . 16 residents did not provide any information on ethnicity .

429 residents supported the Greek Catholic Church, 203 residents the Roman Catholic Church, 42 residents the Orthodox Church, nine residents the Evangelical Church AB and two residents of another denomination. 12 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 17 residents was not determined.

tourism

Drienica is known regionally as a ski area that connects directly to the upper end of the village and includes the slopes of the 1068 m high Lysá mountain and the 762 m high Háj mountain .
