Ražňany (until 1948 Slovak "Ňaršany"; Hungarian Nyársardó ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with a population of 1,570 (December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Sabinov , a district of the Prešovský kraj , as well as to the traditional Šariš landscape .

The village is located in the Torysa Valley below the Bachureň Mountains on both banks of the Šalgov Stream . The municipality is hilly and largely deforested. The center of the village is at an altitude of 350  m nm and is two kilometers from Sabinov and 19 kilometers from Prešov .

Neighboring municipalities are Sabinov in the north (plus the Orkucany district in the east), Šarišské Michaľany and Ostrovany in the south-east, Jarovnice in the south and west and Uzovský Šalgov and Pečovská Nová Ves in the north-west.

history

Church in Ražňany

The place was mentioned for the first time in 1248 as Ardounyars as part of the estate of Sharosh Castle . For a long time there were two settlements Nyárs ( mentioned as Naas in 1283 ) and Ardó ( mentioned as Ordo in 1315 ), which merged into one place by the 18th century at the latest. In 1427 there were a total of 32 portals ; the place then belonged to the Semsey dynasty , from the 16th to the 19th century also Ujfalussy and Tahy . In 1787 there were 85 houses and 561 inhabitants and in 1828 98 houses and 724 inhabitants were employed in agriculture and linen weaving. In the 19th century there were also large cherry orchards, some of which still exist today.

Until 1918, the place in Sharosh County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In 1948 the municipality was renamed Ražňany for national political reasons.

According to the 2011 census, Ražňany had 1,460 inhabitants, including 1,169 Slovaks, 150 Roma, five Russians, two Czechs and one each from Poland, Serbia and Ukraine. 131 residents gave no answer. 1263 residents confessed to the Roman Catholic Church, 32 residents to the Greek Catholic Church, eight residents to the Evangelical Church AB, three residents to the Orthodox Church, two residents to the Jehovah's Witnesses and one resident each to the Apostolic Church and one to the Jewish community; one resident was of a different denomination. Eleven residents were non-denominational and the denomination of 138 residents was not determined.

Buildings

  • Roman Catholic Demetrios Church from 1510, 1540 and 1778 expanded and repaired in 1908. Inside there are architectural details in Gothic and Renaissance styles

Ražňany sports airfield

The next connection to a national road ( 1st order road 68 ) is in Sabinov, two kilometers away. There is also a train station on the Kysak – Muszyna railway line .
