Dundee United

Wilson began his career in 1998 as a youth at Dundee United . In 2000 he got his first professional contract and in January 2002 he made his league debut. A few months later, he extended his contract for two years. In the 2002/03 season he became a regular player. In December 2002 he scored his first league goal as a professional player with a header against Hibernian Edinburgh . Five days later he was named “Young Player of the Month” for November. He said it was a great honor for him to have received this award. Before the end of the season, Wilson signed a new contract, which was dated until June 2006.

On November 6, 2004, he was expelled from the derby against Dundee FC for an alleged handball of the field, although the television images showed that Wilson was playing the ball with his head. The Scottish Football Association stated that despite the referee's mistake, the club could not appeal the red card. This is only possible with red cards with a violent background. This decision of the Scottish Federation was heavily criticized by the media, the journalists spoke of a "big mistake".

A few days later, the English club Everton expressed interest in signing him, but a move did not materialize.

Due to his good and constant performance and the subsequent nomination for the “Young Player of the Year” award, Manchester City wanted to sign him for the next season and was just one of many interested parties from the Premier League . Nonetheless, Wilson confirmed that he wanted to stay for the foreseeable future and signed a new three-year contract in August 2005.

Celtic Glasgow

In early 2006, Glenn Hoddle , then coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers , wanted to sign Wilson. The clubs Heart of Midlothian , Leeds United and Celtic FC also struggled for a commitment, which had included a release clause of £ 500,000 in his new contract. In January 2006, Wilson moved to Celtic for the fixed £ 500,000 and received 25 percent of the transfer fee from Celtic. Two weeks later he made his debut for Celtic against his old club. In the 2006/07 season he suffered from several serious injuries, such as a broken leg and a knee injury with subsequent surgery.

Under coach Neil Lennon , Wilson slowly grew to become a regular. On February 1, 2011, he scored his first league goal for Celtic in a 3-0 win over Aberdeen FC . His second goal of the season followed twelve days later in a 3-1 win at his old club Dundee United . On March 2, he scored the decisive 1-0 winner in a cup derby against Glasgow Rangers in a very spirited derby that ended with three red cards for the Rangers.

Bristol City

In August 2012, the defender signed a contract with Bristol City from the Football League Championship of the English second division.

National team

The first major event that he played with a youth national team was the U-16 European Football Championship in 2001 , in which you reached third place in a group with France, Croatia and Finland and thus did not qualify for the finals. In February 2004, he played his first of 19 U-21 internationals when he lost 2-1 to Hungary . In November he was nominated for the international B match against the German team in 2006 , which was launched for perspective players for the 2006 World Cup in Germany . The team won 3-0 with two goals from Benjamin Auer and one from Thorben Marx .

By moving to Celtic Glasgow , Wilson hoped to have more opportunities in the Scottish national football team , but many injuries threw him back again and again and so he did not get enough appearances in his club. In November 2010 he was nominated for a friendly against the Faroe Islands , but had to cancel due to an injury. In February 2011 he was again nominated for the national team. The 3-0 win over Northern Ireland made his first A international game when he came on for Phillip Bardsley in the 58th minute .
