Marc David Wilson (born August 17, 1987 in Aghagallon , Northern Ireland ) is an Irish football player . The defender , who can also be used in the central defensive midfield, comes from the youth department of Manchester United . Via Portsmouth FC and various loan stations in lower-class leagues, he made his way to the English first division club Stoke City . He is also active for the Irish national team after playing for the national team of his home country Northern Ireland as a youth .
Career
Portsmouth FC
Wilson moved to the youth department of Manchester United in 2000 , did not make it into the professional squad and moved to Portsmouth FC in 2004 . The first years at Pompey he spent in the second team or as a short loan at the second and third rate clubs Yeovil Town , FC Bournemouth and Luton Town . In the 2008/09 season, shortly after he had signed a new three-year contract, he made the jump to the first team. First appearances and starting eleven debuts in league and cup competitions followed. After a total of three league games this season, Wilson caused a scandal in preparation for the 2009/10 season with teammate David Nugent . During one of the club's trips to Portugal, both players clashed so much that the club sent them back to England and fined them.
Nevertheless, Wilson was one of the first choice of coach Paul Hart this season and his successor Avram Grant preferred Wilson as a right-back, so that he came to 28 league appearances. It was also Grant who first used Wilson in central midfield towards the end of the season. The season in which he extended his contract to the end of the 2012/13 season in February was with mixed successes for the team. In the FA Cup they reached the final and failed there at Chelsea ; in the league, however, you could not prevent relegation to the Football League Championship .
In preparation for the second division season, Wilson was named team captain and, at the age of 22, became the youngest person to wear the armband in the club's history. At the same time, coach Steve Cotterill announced that Wilson could leave the club if an offer was made, as the club had to make savings due to relegation.
Stoke City
As a result, Wilson was transferred to Stoke City in the summer of 2010 , but Liam Lawrence and Dave Kitson moved to Portsmouth in return. While he was used in the first half of the first season at the Potters as a right-back and temporarily in central midfield, coach Tony Pulis moved him to the left-back position through the injury of Danny Higginbotham . Due to the flexibility as well as his performance, Wilson quickly became a regular. The 2010/11 season ended the team in 13th place in the table, but also reached the FA Cup finals, where they failed at Manchester City .
In October 2012, he extended his contract by three years until he a short time later in the game against Sunderland the fibula broke, turned out for five months and came in February to his next league use.
National team
Wilson was embroiled in the long-running conflict between the Irish Football Association and the Football Association of Ireland . For some time now, IFA has resisted the trend that talented players tend to opt for the Irish national team even though they have no family ties to the Republic. The International Court of Justice confirmed this possibility, citing the Good Friday Agreement , so that Wilson, who played for Northern Ireland in U-15, could still decide for the Republic of Ireland.
There he went through the U-18, the U-19 and the U-21 and finally came at the Nations Cup 2011 to his debut in the senior team against Wales . With Ireland he won the competition. In January 2012, he finally turned down the offer from Michael O'Neill , Northern Ireland coach, to play for his home country. Two more games followed in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup .
On May 12, 2016 he was appointed by national coach Martin O'Neill to the provisional 35-player squad for the European Championship 2016 . He was the first player to be removed from the squad on May 23 due to an injury.
