- February 20 : The Italian writer Filippo Tommaso Marinetti publishes his futuristic manifesto in the Paris newspaper Le Figaro , thereby founding futurism .
World premieres
ballet
- May 19 : The Ballets Russes under the direction of Sergei Pavlovich Djagilew gives a guest performance in Paris. At the Théâtre du Châtelet, Polovetsian dances will be premiered, which has been removed as an independent ballet by Michel Fokine from Alexander Borodin's opera Fürst Igor .
Instrumental music
- January 9th : The three-part piano piece Gaspard de la nuit by Maurice Ravel , inspired by Aloysius Bertrand 's short prose of the same name , is premiered by Ricardo Viñes in Paris.
- November 28 : The New York Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Walter Damrosch performs the 3rd Piano Concerto by Sergei Wassiljewitsch Rachmaninow for the first time. The criticism is rather restrained, but the piece soon becomes very popular.
Opera
- January 25 : The symphony opera Elektra by Richard Strauss with the libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal is successfully premiered by Ernst von Schuch at the Hofoper in Dresden . Ernestine Schumann-Heink sings the role of Klytämnestra.
- February 3rd : The world premiere of the opera Il principe di Zilah by Franco Alfano takes place at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa.
- April 1 : The opera fragment The Marriage (Orig .: Shenitba ) by Modest Petrowitsch Mussorgski based on the comedy of the same name by Nikolai Wassiljewitsch Gogol from 1868 is premiered at the Court Opera in Saint Petersburg.
- May 2 : The opera Bacchus by Jules Massenet has its world premiere at the Grand Opéra Paris .
- May 5th : The comic opera Robins Ende by Eduard Künneke is premiered at the Nationaltheater in Mannheim.
- October 7th : The opera Der goldene Hahn (Orig .: Solotoi petuschok ) by Nikolai Andrejewitsch Rimski-Korsakow based on a libretto by Vladimir Ivanovich Bjelski based on the fairy tale of the same name by Alexander Pushkin , which in turn is based on the saga of the Arabic astrologer from the collection of stories The Alhambra by Washington Irving , will be premiered at the Zimin Opera in Moscow.
- November 6th : The music drama Izeÿl by Eugen d'Albert is premiered at the Stadttheater Hamburg . Rudolf Lothar wrote the libretto based on a model by Armand Silvestre and Eugen Morand.
- December 4 : The world premiere of the opera Susannen's Secret by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari , which the composer calls an intermezzo , based on the libretto by Enrico Golisciani, takes place at the Munich Court Theater .
operetta
- January 22nd : The world premiere of the operetta Ein Herbstmanöver by Emmerich Kálmán takes place at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna and brings the composer his first success. The work is a German adaptation of the Hungarian Kálmán operetta Tatárjárás from 1908 . The work was very well received and made it to Broadway in New York under the name The Gay Hussars .
- August 3rd : The world premiere of the operetta Miss Bagpipes by Rudolf Nelson based on a libretto by Fritz Grünbaum and Hans Reichert takes place at the Kleiner Schauspielhaus in Berlin.
- October 7th : The world premiere of the operetta The Prince's Child by Franz Lehár in the Johann Strauss Theater takes place in Vienna. The libretto is by Victor Léon using a character from the novel Le roi des montagnes by Edmond About . In contrast to other Lehár operettas, the piece never made it onto the repertoire.
- November 12th : The world premiere of the operetta Der Graf von Luxemburg by Franz Lehár, conducted by Robert Stolz , from the “ Silver Operetta Era ” at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, run by Wilhelm Karczag , is received with stormy enthusiasm and then runs over 300 times.
- December 1st : The world premiere of the Singspiel Brüderlein fein by Leo Fall with the libretto by Julius Wilhelm takes place in Vienna. The focus of the piece is the composer and conductor Joseph Drechsler . The title refers to Ferdinand Raimund's play Der Bauer als Millionär .
