Arnold Sundgaard
Arnold Olaf Sundgaard (born October 31, 1909 in Saint Paul , Minnesota , † October 22, 2006 in Dallas ) was an American librettist and playwright.
Sundgaard studied English at the University of Wisconsin until 1935 and attended the Yale Drama School . Famous for the drama Spirochete about fighting syphilis, which was performed in 1938 at the Chicago Federal Theater Project . He later wrote about half a dozen plays that were performed on Broadway, including Of Love Remembered (under Burgess Meredith ).
Sundgaard worked as a librettist and songwriter. a. together with Kurt Weill and Alec Wilder . For Weill he wrote the libretto for the opera Down in the Valley , for Wilder a. a. the lyrics to How Loveley Is Christmas (for the album Bing Crosby's White Christmas ) and the libretto for the opera The Lowland Sea . For Douglas Moore he wrote the libretto for the opera Giants in the Earth based on Ole Edvart Rølvaag , for which Moore received the 1951 Pulitzer Prize for Music.
In later years Sundgaard wrote picture books for children, such as The Lamb and the Butterfly with the illustrator Eric Carle (1988) and The Bear Who Loved Puccini with Dominic Catalano .
