Johannes Pi Scheffer (born December 21, 1909 in Amsterdam , † January 14, 1988 in Naarden ) was a Dutch composer and conductor of brass music .

The first name of the composer Pi Scheffer was taken from a nickname given by colleagues. He received his first music lessons from his father, who was a choirmaster and organist and gave his son practical instruction on this largest wind instrument. This aroused his curiosity and he learned to play the clarinet in order to play in the Harmonie Laurens Janszoon Coster wind orchestra in Haarlem , later trombone , which he played in the Sursum fanfare orchestra in Bloemendaal and in the Euterpe symphony orchestra in Haarlem.

Although he became known under Pi Scheffer inside and outside the Netherlands, Johannes Scheffer was initially an English teacher for a short time after studying English , German and pedagogy at the teacher training college in Haarlem. The decision to become a professional musician brought him to radio and various orchestras (Skymasters, OK Wobblers, Zaaiers, Divertimento-orkest). During this time he studied harmony , counterpoint with Ernest W. Mulder and conducting with Toon Verwey .

After a few years he made another professional U-turn and received his doctorate in linguistics and literature from the University of Amsterdam . From 1964 he was a member of the teaching staff at the University of Amsterdam.

Nevertheless, he remained loyal to music during this time. He stepped in as a conductor and musician in many (wind) orchestras. A well-known music publisher for wind orchestra music was able to win for wind orchestra compositions in around 1960. His compositional style includes aspects of modern light music as well as elements of big band music.
