The “scandal concert” in Vienna
- February 23 : The world premiere of the Gurre-Lieder by Arnold Schönberg by the Tonkünstler Orchestra in the Great Musikvereinssaal in Vienna under the direction of Franz Schreker is an overwhelming success. But the composer, hurt by the earlier conservative attitude of the Viennese audience, refuses to accept the applause. This takes revenge at the scandal concert on March 31st.
- March 31 : An orchestra conducted by Arnold Schönberg plays pieces by contemporary composers in the Musikvereinssaal, most of whom belong to Expressionism and the Second Viennese School . The audience reacts to the unusual music with tumults and riots. The concert finally has to be canceled.

ballet
- May 29 : The world premiere of the ballet Le sacre du printemps by Igor Stravinsky at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris with the Ballets Russes by Sergei Pavlovich Djagilew leads to a whistle concert and tumults. It is only thanks to the stoic calm of the conductor Pierre Monteux that the performance can be played to the end. The audience protests again and again at the following performances. Today the piece is considered to be the beginning of modern ballet .
Opera
- January 22nd : The world premiere of the comic opera Tante Simona by Ernst von Dohnányi takes place at the Hofoper in Dresden.
- April 1st : La vida breve , a lyric drama in two acts and four pictures by Manuel de Falla based on a libretto by Carlos Fernández-Shaw has its first performance in French at the Casino municipal in Nice. De Falla uses many elements from Spanish folklore in his veristically and impressionistically influenced opera, such as the Canto Jondo with rhythmic ostinati , as well as the flamenco .
- November 4th : The opera Ulenspiegel by Walter Braunfels , based on the novel Thyl Ulenspiegel by Charles De Coster , has its world premiere at the Royal Court Theater in Stuttgart . After three to four more performances of the work, which was enthusiastically received by the audience, but received mixed reviews, no further production followed for around a hundred years.
- December 3 : At the Luna Park Theater in Saint Petersburg is the futuristic opera Victory over the Sun (Победа над Солнцем) as a collective work of the artist Alexei Kruchenykh , Velimir Khlebnikov , Mikhail Matyushin and Kasimir Malevich premiered. The work only has one more performance on December 5th and leads to one of the greatest scandals in theater history.
- December 4th : The world premiere of the comic opera L'amore medico ( The Lover as Doctor) by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari takes place at the Dresden Court Opera in the German adaptation by Richard Batka .
- December 15th : The opera Parisina by Pietro Mascagni based on the libretto by Gabriele D'Annunzio has its world premiere at the Teatro alla Scala di Milano in Milan.
- The musical farce Panurge by Jules Massenet also appeared in 1913 .

- January 25th : The operetta Du liebes Wien by Robert Stolz is premiered in Vienna at the Intimate Theater .
- February 6 : The world premiere of the operetta The Two Hussars by Leon Jessel takes place at the Theater des Westens in Berlin.
- March 19 : The Laughing Husband , an operetta by Edmund Eysler based on the libretto by Julius Brammer and Alfred Grünwald, has its world premiere at the Bürgertheater in Vienna.
- October 4 : At the Berliner Theater in Berlin, the operetta As once in May is premiered by Walter Kollo with the libretto by Rudolf Bernauer and Rudolph Schanzer .
- October 11th : The world premiere of the operetta The Ideal Wife of Franz Lehár takes place at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna.
- October 25 : The operetta Polenblut by Oskar Nedbal with the libretto by Leo Stein based on a story by Alexander Sergejewitsch Pushkin is premiered at the Vienna Carltheater .
- November 14 : The world premiere of the operetta The Juxbaron by Walter Kollo takes place at the Carl-Schultze-Theater in Hamburg.
- December 20 : The first performance of the opera farce The night express train from Leo Fall takes place at the Johann Strauss Theater in Vienna.
- December 31st : Leon Jessel's musical comedy Who last laughs is premiered in Berlin.

- September 24th : With the world premiere of the work Introduction, Passacaglia and Fugue for organ in E minor op. 127 by Max Reger , played by Karl Straube , the organ in the Jahrhunderthalle , the largest organ in the world at the time , becomes a creation of W. Sauer Orgelbau Frankfurt (Oder) , carried out by the organ building company EF Walcker & Cie , inaugurated.
- October 12 : The four tone poems after A. Böcklin composed by Max Reger are premiered in Essen with the municipal orchestra. The four parts of the work refer to four paintings by Arnold Böcklin , including Die Toteninsel .
- October 19 : In the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph I , the Wiener Konzerthaus opens with a gala concert by the Wiener Concertverein . Richard Strauss composed this be Festive Prelude op. 61 .
