Kurt Honolka

Kurt Honolka (born September 27, 1913 in Leitmeritz , Bohemia ; † October 7, 1988 in Stuttgart ) was a German musicologist , journalist, and music and theater critic .

Life

After graduation Honolka studied in Prague next musicology and jurisprudence and earned his doctorate in law. Professionally, he later turned almost exclusively to the field of music. In 1939 he became a member of the NSDAP (party number 7.101.043). and has been writing for the Prague daily newspaper Der neue Tag since 1939 . Since 1941 he was a war reporter with the Wehrmacht and during this time published a. a. Fighter pilots over England. From the diary of a fighter squadron (Fels-Verlag, Essen 1942) and fellow pilots (Fels -Verlag, Essen 1944). After the end of the Second World War , these works were included in the list of literature to be sorted out in the Soviet Zone .

From 1949 to 1963 Honolka was a columnist and music critic for the daily newspaper Stuttgarter Nachrichten . He also worked as a music writer and translated numerous opera libretti , mainly from Czech and Italian, into German. He also endeavored to revive many forgotten opera works by important composers by underlaying them with new, more theatrical texts, such as for Carl Maria von Weber's Euryanthe and Franz Schubert's Alfonso and Estrella .

In 1980 Kurt Honolka was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Medal of Merit . In 1986 he received the Schubart Literature Prize from the city of Aalen.
