L'amore medico (German The Lover as a Doctor , literally "love as a doctor") is a comical opera in two acts by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari . The libretto is by Enrico Golisciani and is based on the comedy of the same name (original title L'amour médecin ) by Molière . It premiered on December 4, 1913 at the Dresden Court Opera in a German adaptation by Richard Batka . The Italian premiere took place in Turin in 1929 .

First act - garden of the Villa Arnolfos
The pretty Luzinde is the pride of her father, the rich landowner Arnulf. For nothing in the world does he want to lose her. He is already dreading the day when Luzinde will explain to him that she has fallen in love with a man and is planning to marry. Meanwhile, he has no idea that this event has long since come true; because Luzinde raves about Clitandro. She hasn't exchanged words with him yet, but the looks they always throw at each other speak volumes. When Luzinde carefully indicates her intention to her father, he is beside himself. He sticks to his resolute rejection.
The chambermaid Lisette wants to comfort her mistress. She persuades her to use a ruse. She should just go to bed and pretend to be sick. Said and done.
Second act - ballroom of Villa Arnolfos
Concerned Arnulf has one doctor after another called; but no one can help his daughter. Luzinde seems to have a very unusual illness. Lisette comes along with an unknown doctor and explains that after a long search she has found the right specialist. But this one is none other than Clitandro, who is so adored by Luzinde. He pretends to be a doctor of the soul and seems to examine the apparently sick woman very carefully. He promises the worried father that he will be able to completely heal his daughter. In order to achieve the goal, however, she had to appear to marry him, the doctor. Because every means is right for Arnulf not to lose his daughter, he immediately calls a notary to draw up a marriage contract. When Arnolfo gradually sees his daughter becoming happier and happier, his worries also vanish. Suddenly, however, he realizes that the doctor leaves the house with his daughter tightly embraced. Now he realizes that he has been tricked.
