John R. Barrows

John R. Barrows (born February 12, 1913 in Glendale , California , † January 11, 1974 in Madison , Wisconsin ) was an American horn player who worked in both classical music and jazz .

Barrows has been solo horn player in outstanding US orchestras, including the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra , the Army Air Forces Band, the New York City Opera, the New York City Ballet and the Casals Festival Orchestra. He also interpreted horn compositions by Gunther Schuller . In the field of jazz he also played from 1946 with Woody Herman and His Orchestra , Artie Shaw , Mitch Miller , Billy Butterfield , Stuart McKay , Dizzy Gillespie / Johnny Richards , Lou Stein , LaVern Baker , Manny Albam , Mundell Lowe , Bob Brookmeyer , Gil Evans / Miles Davis ( Sketches of Spain , 1959), John Lewis , James Moody , Al Cohn , Sauter-Finegan Orchestra and Julius Watkins .

In addition to his work as a horn player, he was Professor of Horn at Yale (1957–1961) and at New York University (1958–1961) and between 1961 and 1974 at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

By Alec Wilder wrote that numerous pieces of horn for Barrows, once said, John Barrows had such a exquisite musical taste that during his performances an atmosphere "spiritual glow" arose.
