Julius Watkins

Julius Watkins (* 10. October 1921 in Short Hills , New Jersey ; † 4. April 1977 in Detroit ) was an American horn player of the Jazz .

Live and act

At the age of nine he specialized in the French horn , but also played the trumpet . He played with Ernie Fields from 1943 to 1946 and attended the Manhattan School of Music for three years before playing in the Milt Buckner Big Band in 1949 . He was then in bands of Kenny Clarke , Oscar Pettiford and Pete Rugolo (1954). In 1955 he played in Gigi Gryce 's nonet ( Nica's Tempo ) . In 1956 he led the band Les Jazz Modes with Charlie Rouse , whose 10-inch LP was released by Dawn . In 1958 he participated in the Miles Davis / Gil Evans production of Porgy and Bess and the Evans album New Bottle, Old Wine . He then played with George Shearing , in the Quincy Jones Big Band (1959-1961) and with Charles Mingus ( Music Written for Monterey 1965, Let My Children Hear Music , 1971). He also made recordings with other jazz stars, e. B. Thelonious Monk ( MONK , 1956), Sonny Rollins , Milt Jackson , Miles Davis, John Coltrane ( Africa / Brass , 1961), Art Farmer and Pharoah Sanders ( Karma , 1969), but also with the Jazz Composer's Orchestra and Gil Evans ( The Individualism of Gil Evans , 1964).

Honors

In honor of the French horn pioneer of jazz, the Julius Watkins Horn Festival has been held in New York since 1994 .
