Werner Wolf Glaser (born April 14, 1913 in Cologne , † March 29, 2006 in Västerås , Sweden ) was a German-Danish-Swedish composer , art historian , psychologist and conductor .

Life

Werner Wolf Glaser was born on April 14, 1913 in Cologne as the second son of the pianist Julie Glaser (née Wolff) and her husband Viktor Glaser. The mother promoted the musical education of the son. In 1929 Glaser passed the entrance examination at the Cologne Music Academy and was taught by Peter Dahm , Carl Emil Theodor Ehrenberg and Philipp Jarnach , among others . Glaser studied piano , conducting and composition at the Cologne University of Music , after which he went to Bonn to study art history . Finally he continued his composition studies in Berlin - among others with Paul Hindemith - and took up further studies in psychology . From 1929 to 1931 he was conductor at the Chemnitz Opera and in 1932 came to Cologne as choir director . During the time of National Socialism he was expelled from Germany as a Jew . He emigrated via Paris in August 1934 with the help of the Danish flutist Johan Bentzon to Lyngby , Denmark , and became a lecturer at the Frederiksbergs Folk Music Academy in Copenhagen . In 1943 he received Danish citizenship. After the threat of deportation of the Danish Jews to concentration camps, Werner Wolf Glaser and his family belonged to the Jews who were brought to safety in Sweden on October 6, 1943 in a rescue operation in fishing boats.

From 1944 to 1959 he was the conductor of the Södra Västmanlands Orkesterförbund and was director of the Västerås Musikskola until 1975 , where he worked with Ivar Andrén and Gunnar Axén . He also wrote music reviews for the regional daily newspaper “Vestmanlans Läns Tidning”.

Glaser, who received Swedish citizenship in 1951, left behind a fairly extensive oeuvre in many genres: including nine books of poetry , the lyrical work Orfeues undergang and texts for numerous choral works, as well as around 560 compositions, including 13 symphonies, 14 string quartets and six operas , a large number of chamber music, youth and teaching works. The Hindemith school is recognizable in his tonal language, but he developed his own style.

Werner Wolf Glaser died on March 29, 2006 in Västerås and was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Stockholm. Wolf Glaser had been married to Renate Eiser since 1934 and had four children with her: Jo Svend (born 1936), Etienne (born 1937), Per Ivar (born 1942) and Juliette (born 1948).

In Germany, Kolja Lessing is committed to maintaining his work.

Commemoration

On September 10, 2018, seven stumbling blocks were laid in front of two residential buildings in Cologne as part of the art and memory project by the artist Gunther Demnig . The stumbling blocks are reminiscent of Werner Wolf Glaser and his wife Renate (née Eiser), of their parents Viktor and Julie Glaser (née Wolff) - the mother died after the deportation in 1943 in the Sobibor concentration camp , the in-laws Salomon and Sara Selma Eiser ( born Isaacson) and to his brother Georg Glaser, who was murdered in 1944 in the Auschwitz extermination camp .
