Similar species

  • Phyllotreta nemorum ( Linnaeus , 1758) - The dark intermediate field on the elytra is only slightly tapered; the species is more common and larger.
  • Phyllotreta vittula ( Redtenbacher , 1849) - The dark intermediate field on the elytra maintains its width, while the yellow bands in the shoulder area are broadened.

Occurrence

The species is native to the Palearctic . The species of beetle is widespread in Europe and may only be absent on the island of Ireland . The species may be present in North Africa (Algeria). The species was introduced in North America. The species was also introduced in Australia and New Zealand.

Way of life

The beetles mainly inhabit vegetable gardens and fields. The animals feed on cabbage leaves . They have very strong muscles in their hind legs, which enable them to jump very far, hence the name "earth flea". In spring, the female lays the eggs on the ground. The larvae feed on the roots of the cabbage. Both the beetles and the larvae can cause significant damage to agriculture. In spring, for example, the beetles eat the fields with the young plants, sometimes completely bare.
