Loulie Jean Norman (born March 12, 1913 in Birmingham , Alabama , † August 2, 2005 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American soprano and singer of the original Star Trek theme song.

Life

Loulie Jean Norman was born in Alabama in 1913 as one of the five children of Rebecca and Edward Norman. She had three brothers, Cham, Rea and James, and a sister, Rosalind, all of whom have passed away.

Norman started her career in New York as a radio singer or radio presenter with her own show and as a model. She had the opportunity to become an opera singer, but postponed her plans because of the wedding to pilot Norman Henry Price , a well-known American World War II hero. They moved to Panama City , Florida, where Price worked as a flight instructor for Clark Gable ; a lifelong friendship developed from this.

The Norman-Price couple later moved to Los Angeles. The four children Patricia, Pamela, Priscilla and Norman Jr. were born in California. In LA she started her career as a very successful studio singer and worked a. a. with Frank Sinatra , Spike Jones , Elvis Presley , Henry Mancini , Ray Charles , Dean Martin and Bing Crosby .

She dubbed Diahann Carroll as Clara in the film version Porgy and Bess in the song Summertime . Norman was also the voice for Tolkin's The Lion Sleeps Tonight . Norman has worked in particular with the composer Gordon Jenkins (1910-1984) and has released several albums.

She became “world famous” as the original voice of the original Star Trek theme tune, composed by Alexander Courage and written by Gene Roddenberry .

She died of old age in the presence of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at the age of 93 .
