Army of Northeastern Virginia

The Army of Northeastern Virginia (Army in northeastern Virginia) was the first major unit of the United States Army in the Civil War in the eastern theater of war . It emerged from the military area established on May 27, 1861 Northeastern Virginia, which was led by Brigadier General Irvin McDowell . In June, McDowell formed the army of 30,000 men, divided into five divisions .

Although called an army , it only consisted of units of corps strength . Her first commander in chief was Irvin McDowell as the military commander. Under his leadership, she was defeated by the Potomac Confederate Army in the first battle at Bull Run .

She was then transferred to the Potomac military district, later in the army and the Potomac military area.

On March 8, 1862, it was renamed the Potomac Army on the orders of President Lincoln .
