Hans Kallmeyer

Hans Julius Bernhard Kallmeyer (born September 1, 1882 in Erfurt ; † August 28, 1961 in Bayreuth ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

Due to the transfer of his father, an officer in the Prussian army , Kallmeyer grew up in Goldap , East Prussia . He attended school in Gumbinnen and the Collegium Fridericianum . Then he studied until 1907 law .

After studying law, he turned to painting and received his training at the Dresden Art Academy . There he was a student of Richard Müller and Emanuel Hegenbarth . As a freelance artist, he later painted again in Königsberg . He found his motives in nature. From 1905 to 1944 he painted almost exclusively animals. In his studio in Nidden he created paintings of moose , sea ​​eagles , herons and ducks . He is therefore also known as the painter .

As an athlete , Kallmeyer was a co-founder of SpVgg ASCO Königsberg . He played ice hockey and practiced the javelin throw . His son, born in 1924, is the architect Lothar Kallmeyer .

During the air raids on Königsberg at the end of August 1944, Kallmeyer's studio and his paintings there were burned. The flight and expulsion of Germans from Central and Eastern Europe from 1945 to 1950 brought him to Bayreuth, where he died in 1961.
