Emanuel Hegenbarth (born January 14, 1868 in Böhmisch Kamnitz , † July 18, 1923 in Dresden ) was a German painter and draftsman.

Life

Hegenbarth studied from 1884 at the art academy in Munich. After two years he interrupted his studies in order to start a commercial training at the commercial school in Leipzig. In 1892 he resumed studies at the Academy of Arts in Berlin and continued in Munich. There he joined the animal painting class of Heinrich von Zügel , the main representative of Munich Impressionism and co-founder of the Munich and New Secession in Vienna. At the turn of the century, Hegenbarth was a member of the Dresden Art Association , the first Dresden Secession . After the dissolution of the secession, he took part in the artist group Die Elbier . From 1901 he lived as a freelance artist in Munich. In 1902 he married Zügel's eldest daughter Anna Emilie.

Hegenbarth, whose motto was "Make artists, don't talk" because he did not appreciate major discussions about art, was offered a position at the Royal Saxon Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden in 1903 . He became a professor for the newly established animal painting class. His students included u. a. the young Kurt Schwitters . In 1909 Hegenbarth was a founding member of the Dresden Artists' Association . From 1905 to 1908 he also directed his younger cousin Josef Hegenbarth , who later became one of the most important draftsmen and illustrators of the 20th century. Hannes Hegen was her great-nephew. Hegenbarth died in 1923 after an operation.

In addition to landscapes and city scenes, Hegenbarth preferred to paint pictures of animals. He was particularly fascinated by cattle and horses, which he portrayed over and over again. The animals are mostly in resting positions, Hegenbarth was not interested in movement, but in materiality and mood. In an impressionistic manner, light and color impressions that create an atmospheric mood are decisive in his pictures. In the last few years he broke away from this: high-contrast color surfaces with simplified contours dominate his paintings. Among Heinrich von Zügel's numerous students, Hegenbarth is one of the most artistically independent; His style of painting showed an increasingly expressive and sometimes bold handwriting from an early age.
