Morton Gould

Morton Gould (born December 10, 1913 in Richmond Hill , Long Island , † February 21, 1996 in Orlando , Florida ) was an American composer , conductor and pianist .

Life

Gould studied piano with Abby Whiteside and composition with Vincent Jones at the Institute of Musical Art (now the Juilliard School of Music ) and at New York University . Initially he worked in radio and was a pianist for the Radio City Music Hall show . In 1934 he was arranger and conductor of a series of orchestral programs for WOR Mutual Radio . He achieved great popularity with his radio programs and became known in the United States of America, especially in the years after 1940 his programs Cresta Blanca Carnival and The Chrysler Hour (CBS) gave the "initial spark".

Gould composed Broadway pieces ( Billion Dollar Baby , Arms and the Girl ), film music ( Delightfully Dangerous , Cinerama Holiday , Windjammer ), music for television ( Holocaust , the CBS documentary World War One ) and ballets ( Interplay , Fall River Legend and I'm Old Fashioned ). Gould processed elements of folklore , jazz , blues and gospel music in his works .

As a conductor, he has directed all major US orchestras as well as orchestras in Canada, Mexico, Europe, Japan and Australia.

In 1936 his Choral und Fugue in Jazz was premiered by Leopold Stokowski .

Morton Gould was president of the collecting society American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers ( ASCAP , comparable to the German GEMA ) from 1986 to 1994 . In his honor, the Society for the Promotion of Young Composers created the Morton Gould Young Composer Awards, which are announced annually .
