Dadaism
- February 5 : Hugo Ball and his girlfriend Emmy Hennings found the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich at Spiegelgasse 1, not far from Lenin's exile apartment . This is where the Dada movement arises . The Romanian poet Tristan Tzara as well as Hans Arp and Richard Huelsenbeck soon joined the cabaret.
World premieres
Opera
- March 5 : Eugen d'Albert's opera Die toten Augen with the libretto by Hans Heinz Ewers and Marc Henry premiered at the Dresden Hofoper with great success . The conductor is Fritz Reiner .
- March 28 : The two one-act operas Der Ring des Polykrates and Violanta by Erich Wolfgang Korngold are premiered at the Court Opera in Munich. They are so successful that Korngold will become one of the most played opera composers in Germany and Austria in the next few years.
- April 1 : Die Schneider von Schönau , a comic opera in three acts by the Dutch composer Jan Brandts-Buys with the libretto by Ignaz Michael Welleminsky , is premiered at the Dresden Court Opera. The opera gave the composer international success.
- October 15 : The world premiere of the opera Das Höllisch Gold by Julius Bittner takes place in Darmstadt. The opera becomes the composer's greatest success.
- December 5th : The world premiere of the chamber opera Savitri by Gustav Holst takes place in Wellington Hall in London.

- January 14th : The operetta Der Sterngucker by Franz Lehár based on a libretto by Fritz Löhner-Beda and Alfred Maria Willner is premiered in the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna.
- January 15 : The world premiere of the Singspiel Das Dreimäderlhaus by Heinrich Berté takes place at the Raimund Theater in Vienna . The central figure of the operetta is the composer Franz Schubert , whose music Berté used as the basis of his score in a slightly edited form. The libretto was written by Alfred Maria Willner and Heinz Reichert . It is based on the novel Schwammerl by Rudolf Hans Bartsch .
- January 28 : The operetta Liebeszauber by Oscar Straus is premiered at the Bürgertheater in Vienna.
- March 31 : The world premiere of the operetta Der blessed Balduin by Walter Kollo takes place in Monti's Operetta Theater in Berlin.
- September 9 : The world premiere of the operetta Auf Flügeln des Gesangs by Walter Kollo takes place at the Berlin Theater in Berlin
- December 2 : The operetta Die Rose von Stambul by Leo Fall is premiered at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. The work with the libretto by Julius Brammer and Alfred Grünwald belongs to the so-called silver operetta era .
